1959 MGA 1600 Roadster - 29 years ownership & extensive Imported from the USA in 1990, this early MGA 1600 Roadster presents today as a particularly well-documented and carefully developed example, benefitting from long-term enthusiast ownership, an extensive history file and significant mechanical investment.
Built in November 1959 and supplied new to North America, the car was restored following its arrival in the UK, including conversion to right-hand drive by a respected specialist.
Remarkably, it has remained in the hands of the same owner for almost 29 years. During that time it has been regularly used, carefully maintained and continually improved, with clear evidence of knowledgeable enthusiast ownership throughout.
A particularly strong feature of the car is its substantial and well-organised history file, containing a large collection of invoices, parts receipts and maintenance records accumulated over many years. These documents support the car’s continuous upkeep and mechanical development, reinforcing its reputation as a properly sorted and highly usable MGA.
The accompanying British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate confirms the car was built between 26–30 November 1959 and despatched to North America on 1 December 1959. It remains finished in its correct original colour scheme of Chariot Red with black trim.
The engine has benefitted from a comprehensive rebuild to 1622cc specification together with a programme of ongoing development and refinement. The result is a notably smooth, quiet and usable MGA, complemented by its correct 1600 gearbox.
The car also benefits from numerous sensible upgrades, including:
• Electronic fuel pump
• Kenlowe electric cooling fan
• Spin-on oil filter conversion
• Oil cooler
• Upgraded ignition and electrical components
• LED lighting upgrades
• Battery isolator
The hood and sidescreens are new and appear to have seen very little use.
This is not a concours restoration, but rather the sort of MGA many enthusiasts actively seek: a well-maintained, well-developed driver’s car that has benefitted from decades of careful ownership and continuous improvement.
A particularly appealing MGA 1600 with long-term ownership, extensive documentation and genuine touring capability.
