1959 MGA 1600 Roadster - 29 jaar huidig eigendom
Im-ported from the USA in 1990, this early MGA 1600 Roadster presents today as a particularly well-documented and carefully developed example, benefitting from long-term enthusiast ownership, an extensive history file and a comprehensive programme of mechanical rebuilding and improvement.
This is an early production MGA 1600, built in November 1959 and supplied new to North America in left-hand drive form.
Following its arrival in the UK in 1990, the car was subject to an exacting restoration by a well-regarded specialist, which included conversion to right-hand drive.
Remarkably, the car has remained in the hands of the same owner for almost 29 years. During this time it has been carefully maintained, regularly used and continually improved, with clear evidence of careful, knowledgeable ownership throughout.
A particularly strong feature of this MGA is its substantial and well-organised history file, containing a large number of invoices, parts receipts and maintenance records built up over many years.
These documents support the car’s continuous upkeep and significant mechanical investment, reinforcing its status as a well-sorted and usable example rather than a showpiece.
The car is accompanied by a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, confirming it was built between 26–30 November 1959 and despatched on 1 December 1959 to North America. It is finished in its correct original colour of Chariot Red with black trim, further enhancing its authenticity.
The car benefits from a comprehensive mechanical rebuild and ongoing development, carried out between 2006 and 2008 by specialist engineers.
The engine (16GA-U unit, noted as non-original) has been fully rebuilt to 1622cc specification, including:
· Rebored block and reground crankshaft
· New pistons, bearings and timing gear
· New camshaft and followers
· Fully reworked MGB cylinder head, converted for unleaded fuel
· Combustion chamber improvements for better efficiency and drivability
Importantly, the car has been developed and refined following the rebuild, with early running issues properly diagnosed and resolved. The result is a notably smoother running and quiet engine. The correct 1600 gearbox is fitted.
A number of sensible upgrades have been carried out to improve usability and reliability, including:
· Electric cooling fan (Kenlowe)
· Electronic fuel pump
· Spin-on oil filter conversion
· Oil cooler
· Upgraded ignition and electrical components
· LED lighting upgrades
· Battery isolator
· Additional cooling and carburettor improvements
These enhancements have been thoughtfully implemented to make the car more practical in modern use while retaining its character.
The car presents as an honest and well-maintained example that has clearly been enjoyed.
It is not described as a concours restoration, but rather a properly sorted and usable MGA, benefitting from many years of careful ownership, ongoing maintenance and mechanical development.
This is very much a driver’s car, offering the opportunity to enjoy classic MG motoring as intended.
A particularly appealing MGA 1600 with:
· 29 years long-term enthusiast ownership
· Extensive history file with supporting invoices
· Heritage Certificate confirming original specification
· Comprehensive engine rebuild and mechanical development
· Sensible upgrades for improved usability
A well-documented and carefully maintained example, ready to be enjoyed.
