The Appeal
The first-generation chrome-bumpered MGB GT was surely the finest variant of the B ever sold. With its crisp Pininfarina styling and practical hatchback, the GT was a widely admired 2+2 sports coupe, whose proven 1.8-litre engine offered highly creditable performance for the time.
This particular B rolled out of a Guildford dealership in early 1972, before ending up in the film and TV industry for many years. Its IMDB listing is yet to be written, but we do know the car was comprehensively recommissioned in 2009. The current owner has undertaken a second programme of upgrades including – though not limited to – a new clutch and suspension bushes, new brake pads/lines/shoes and a comprehensive overhaul of the cooling system. The engine, gearbox, suspension and rear axle have all been recently removed, cleaned, refurbished and (where necessary) repainted. The eight-spoke MG wheels are immaculate, though the tracking appears to need some attention.
Internally, this GT has replacement seat covers, carpets and door cards among a wealth of retained original features including the period door cappings. The dashboard has been repainted, and the worn steering wheel is a compact aftermarket fitment, as is the dash-mounted CD player; the current owner reports all instruments are in working order. Electronic ignition ensures the engine fires up quickly, and the gears change smoothly with the desirable overdrive fitted to this vehicle.
Although the headlining and fabric sunroof cover need some attention, the roll-back canvas roof means this GT offers wind-in-the-hair motoring for whoever gets to enjoy the next chapter in its famous life.
