The Appeal
The Carrera 3L was a serious moment in the air cooled 911’s development. These cars, built for just two years, bot the 930’s strong 3L flat six plus the flywheel and crankshaft from the 2.7RS. 1977 cars, like this one, are widely regarded as the one to have because they got improved braking and clutch systems.
This gorgeous Bronze metallic J-Series Targa is very original, blending unrestored body and paintwork with a retrimmed interior and refurbished mechanicals. It benefits from the 1977 model year improvements, plus the sought-after optional 5spd gearbox. It is the ‘Sport’ model which delivers the iconic ‘whale tail’ plus front spoiler, larger 16in Fuchs and higher quality Bilstein shocks. Just 1,123 Carrera 3L Targas were built, of which just 646 were produced in 1977. First registered in Germany, we are told the car has and is said to have been through the hands of just five keepers. It has spent time in USA and most recently Jersey.
The condition is impressive and the history file equally so. The vendor tells us that the records date back to the early 1980s. Recent work includes a gearbox and engine service, new clutch, replacement heat exchanges and new factory specification Bilstein shocks. The interior has also been restored in the original tan, including door cards, dashboard and front seats.
With all that recent work, this is a very enticing example of one of the gems of the air cooled 911 era.
The vendor says:
“The Carrera 3.0 we are offering for sale has never been restored, except for the upholstery (front seats, doors and dashboard) and is therefore in its original condition.
“It shows no signs of corrosion (bodywork dipped in a liquid zinc bath during construction).”
