The Appeal
With the growing interest in the iconic Range Rover Classic, and especially the five-door 1980s versions, particularly enjoyable to use today, here is the opportunity to acquire a genuine piece of history.
This 1986 Vogue, showing around 37,000 miles (59,546 km), was used by Land’s Engineering Development department as a European test vehicle until 1989, as confirmed by an original Land Rover document (photo) and a BMIHT certification (photo). Labels reading “Prototype” as well as a BMIHT certificate confirm this provenance.
Even without this especially appealing backstory, it is a rare and sought-after model. The 1986 model year is indeed the last to feature the traditional vertical-slat grille and the first to receive electronic injection. These features are just the most visible in a long list of year-specific evolutions. More details are presented below.
The seller states that they acquired this five-door silver model in 2016 after several years of not being used. It is only the third private owner of the vehicle. Restoration began in 2024 and consisted of a thorough mechanical and bodywork overhaul, undertaken with the aim of preserving the vehicle’s authenticity.
Work included a thorough service followed by a fresh technical inspection in January 2026 (photo). No particular observations were reported.
The vehicle is currently registered in the United Kingdom and comes with its British V5C registration certificate. However, the seller notes that it can be immediately registered in France.
The bodywork largely retains its Arctic Silver original paint. The interior is also in excellent preserved condition. According to the seller, the driving experience is consistent with the vehicle’s claimed low mileage, about 36,850 miles (59,300 km).
With its exceptional factory history, carefully documented provenance and recent mechanical overhaul, this Range Rover Vogue EFI deserves the attention of brand enthusiasts.
The seller states:
A very pleasant classic, ready for daily use as well as long continental trips. Thanks to its low mileage and the fact that it has spent nearly 25 years sheltered, notably from UV rays, this Range Rover has required only wear-part replacement to return to excellent running condition.

Key Information
- Odometer: The odometer currently reads 000905 km. It has been replaced twice (first in 1989 by Land Rover (LR certificate), second in 2025 by me (history, photos and old counter available). See operation details further below). The mileage is confirmed.
- Registration country: UK
- Technical inspection: renewed on January 20, 2026, with no observations
- Technical specifications: 3,528 cc V8 petrol engine with electronic fuel injection, paired with a four-speed ZF automatic transmission
- Documents: original documentation from Land Rover’s Engineering Development department, purchase invoices, French tax clearance, and invoices for replaced parts
The seller states:
Registered under the name “Aquila” (eagle in Italian) in the factory archives, D956 DAC was used from production release on October 31, 1985 until it was sold on March 16, 1989 by the “Land Rover Engineering Development” department. A BMIHT certificate and an official Land Rover document (see photos) attest to this.

Probably intended for experimental road testing on the European continent (LHD version), the vehicle shows several clues suggesting different tests were conducted. Notably, a printed “Sample Prototype” label on the wiring loom beneath the center console, as well as various paint marks on the front and rear axles.
There are certainly other elements to uncover. Additional information might be obtainable from factory archives.
Thus this is one of the very first 1986 Vogue left-hand drive examples, equipped with sought-after options such as air conditioning and the four-speed ZF automatic transmission.
In the Range Rover Classic lineup, 1986 models hold a special place and, in my view, are highly collectible, as they combine the best of past and future in that single year.
It is the last year for the metal vertical-slat grille, exposed hood hinges, full-opening hood, external fuel filler cap, and exterior tailgate handle.
It is also the first year of electronic injection (+40 hp), the modern four-speed ZF automatic transmission, wraparound bumpers, the front spoiler, and quartz halogen headlights.
Inside, it is also the last year for the four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, the separate front and rear headrests, and the rear bench seat that folds via a central control. It is also the first year of the central radio location on the dashboard.
Ownership history provided by the seller
The good news— and it isn’t that common — is that all successive owners are known.
The good news— and it isn’t that common — is that all successive owners are known.
The first owner, Land Rover sold D956 DAC in spring 1989 through Hexagon, a famous Land Rover dealer in London, whose name still appears on the original license plates on the vehicle.
It was then sold to a private Londoner (name appears on Land Rover documents) who kept it until March 1992. The third owner, also based in London and already older at the time, acquired it to travel between the UK and their secondary residence in Dordogne.
A DVLA document dated October 2014 indicates the vehicle was declared SORN (not in use) since 1999. The reason remains unknown: perhaps the owner’s advancing age or financial considerations. In any case, the Range Rover remained stored in a barn on its Dordogne property.
I bought this vehicle in November 2016 from the son of the last user (the V5C had been issued in his name in 2014 as part of the estate). It was still in the barn, resting on four flat tires and covered in a thick layer of dust.
I knew its revival would be a lengthy project. After an initial cleaning, I stored it again for eight more years before finding the time to undertake its renaissance. I had the equipment, skills and know-how required.
This 1986 Range Rover Classic is now ready to cover any distance. Everything has been undertaken with that in mind.
I’m selling it only because several other projects now need their turn. This Classic provides genuine driving pleasure and will appeal to both serious collectors and nostalgia lovers of the 1970s and 1980s, or to long-distance and off-road weekend enthusiasts. The transfer case functions perfectly.
It’s almost a time capsule on wheels. I recently drove more than 1,000 km behind the wheel without any problems.
Note that the trunk cover is missing. The vehicle was also equipped with a front bull bar and rear lights guards, which I removed but still own.
Regarding the documents, I have a copy of the V5C as well as the original V5C/2. For a European buyer, the vehicle can also be sold with a French classic car registration in my name and immediately available.
More photos and information can be provided to genuinely interested parties.
