The Appeal
This fascinating Beetle will appeal to deep-dive Beetle enthusiasts because it mixes an extremely rare model with a key point in the car’s history. It is a replica of the ultra-rare ‘Zwitter’ transition model, built in the highly detailed style of the jacked-up Type 82E Beetle used by the Wehrmacht as a staff car.
The Zwitter was only available for five months between October 1952 and March 1953 and features the split rear window of the early cars with the oval dash of the later ones. This car left the works shortly after those cars were built, so it isn’t genuine, but someone has built a very close replica that clearly knows these models inside out. The same goes for their knowledge of the Type 82E. The attention to detail across the cleverly patinated bodywork and beautifully detailed interior, with its aged seats and wood trim, makes this car as much a work of art as motorised transport.
Beneath the rear deck lid sits a 1300cc unit, that delivers more usable performance for modern road use. As an alternative to dropped, customised, air-ride-modded Beetles, this Zwitter replica looks like a show magnet.
