The Appeal
When Messerschmitt was banned from building planes at its Regensburg aircraft factory in the immediate post-war years, it scrambled around for ways to keep busy. Recognising the demand for cheap, reliable transport, the firm found the answer in its hugely successful KR200. The new microcar channelled aero thinking with its tandem seating and big, clear Perspex ‘bubble top’ roof, which gave these tiny runabouts their enduring nickname.
The KR200, powered by a 191cc Fichtel and Sachs single-cylinder 2-stroke engine, gave buyers a lighter, larger alternative to Isetta and Heinkel rivals and, at 65 mph, a higher top speed. With its longer wheelbases, Messerschmit’s Cabin Scooter was more stable than its rivals and more spacious.
This very pretty, mint green-and-white restored 1960 KR200 arrived in the UK in 2018. It has been with the current keeper ever since. It presents very well, the bodywork and paintwork in good order, likewise the big canopy roof. The black cabin appears to have been retrimmed and little used. Perhaps the only improvement would be to give the whitewall tyres a good clean to match the rest of the vehicle.
Few classics are as eye-catching and entertaining as a KR200. This one looks very tidy.
