The Appeal
If you're a little short of the seven figures generally required to purchase an original '60s Cobra, then a quality evocation is the obvious way to go. Some of these cars are arguably even better than the originals. In that regard, the Gravetti Cobra is definitely up there. Just 50 kits were sold, yet due to their very high quality, they are considered the premium choice amongst Cobra replica fans.
Of those 50, only 10 or 15 were factory-built cars like this one. Its registration as GE Cars with DVLA, Gravetti body plate and its SABTVR chassis prefix confirm that. The work appears to have been done in 1989, making it one of the last built. The car, like most Gravetti factory cars, takes its identity from the Jaguar donor car, in this case suitably from 1964 when the originals were in production.
As you can see in the photos, it is a seriously impressive car. The burgundy paintwork with silver racing stripe are very appealing, the effect aided by the front and rear chrome bumpers, chrome roll hoops and replica Hallibrand wheels with BF Goodrich tyres. Beneath the bonnet is Rover's reliable 3.5L engine, fitted with twin SUs running through K&N filters and mated to a manual box.
The current keeper acquired the car in 2002 and has used it very sparingly. That limited use has kept the car in good condition, including the black interior, and largely free of the road rash and stone chips that can afflict this sculptural shape. We're told that the car has been recently recommissioned and comes to market with a fresh service. It will be sold with a new voluntary MOT for buyer reassurance.
