Pre-bids

1967 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 4.2L OTS

Highlights

  • Extremely rare very early transition ‘Series 1.25’ car before full switch to Series 1.5
  • Correct ‘7E’ prefix Series 1 4.2L engine
  • Attractive dark red with black leather interior
  • New brake calipers, brake hoses, and tyres fitted in 2024
  • Dry stored indoors and only used in fair weather

The Appeal

The unofficial ‘Series 1.5’ name is applied to the 12 month period when Jaguar evolved the original E-Type by introducing a more comfortable cabin, better cooling and, most obviously, raised headlights. These were the last of the original cars with the pretty slim rear lights and are amongst the rarest of all variants.
This car dials up the exclusivity yet further because it is one of the handful of ‘transition’ cars built before chassis 15889, which is generally recognised as the first Series 1.5 car. Known as ‘Series 1.25’ cars, these ones got some but not all the changes of the Series 1.5 cars, with new parts generally introduced as stocks ran down. Hence it has the raised lights typical of the Series 1.5, but the toggle switches of the Series 1.
Attractively finished in red with a black leather cabin, it is a LHD USA car that we’re told enjoyed a warm climate life before arriving back here in 2019, which the vendor says has helped preserve its condition. It is in good, usable condition inside and out, with some points to note in the paintwork in the photos. We’re told that in 2024 the car received new tyres, calipers and brake hoses.
The car has been dry stored indoors since the vendor bought it in 2024 and used exclusively in fair weather. This ‘Series 1.25’ is one of the rarest and most unusual of all E-Types. It’s said to run and drive well. There’s scope to improve it, but perhaps that can wait until winter, now is about driving it.

History and Paperwork

  • Factory built in 1967 based on chassis number
  • Originally registered in USA
  • Returned to UK in 2015 we are told
  • Registered in UK in October 2019
  • Two registered UK keepers
  • Current keeper since December 2024
  • Showing 45,707 miles
  • Chassis number 1E15811
  • Engine number has correct ‘7E’ Series 1 4.2L E-Type prefix

The Condition

  • Finished in what appears to be Regency Red
  • Paintwork in fair condition for age with areas to note in photos
  • Thes include bonnet, boot and some chips to sills
  • Some areas of paintwork could benefit from attention, as photographed
  • Bodywork in good general order with some bubbling to note in photos
  • Vendor reports the body as solid, benefiting from its US provenance
  • Black folding roof is said to be in fair condition but little used by seller
  • Underside as shown
  • Some chrome tarnish to note in photos but bumpers are presentable
  • Some chrome and rubbers could benefit from a refresh according to seller
  • Chrome wire wheels show some tarnish
  • Vendor tells us car was fitted with new tyres in 2024
  • Black leather interior with bucket seats mixing Series 1 and Series 1.5 features
  • Car retains ‘toggle’ switchgear of Series 1 which appears correct for chassis number
  • Dry stored indoors and only used in fair weather
What an intriguing car this is, because it looks like a ’Series 1.5’ car but retains some Series 1 features, notably the toggle switches. Beyond those beguiling details, this is a presentable and usable E-Type that would suit someone who wants to jump and enjoy it whilst, if they wish, gradually improving it.
The colour appears to be Regency Red,with the paint to bonnet and boot showing some age. Other areas show detail points to note in photos, but the bodywork looks in good general shape for an E-type of this age.
Inside the black leather interior is usable and presentable, with period features like the E-Type-style wood rimmed wheel and classic radio.

The Mechanics

  • 4.2-litre Jaguar XK inline-six with twin carburettors
  • 4-speed manual gearbox with full synchromesh
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • Servo-assisted disc brakes all round
  • New brake calipers and brake hoses fitted in 2024
This car’s ‘7E’ engine prefix, shown in photos, indicates that it is fitted with the correct Series 1 4.2L engine. We’re told that it runs and drives well and benefits from recent brake calipers and hoses. The vendor has always garaged the car and limited use to sunny days.
