The Appeal
While the Series 3 offered a quite radical departure from the original E-Type concept, the Series 2 was merely a light revision of Malcolm Sayer's world-beating design, a thoughtful evolution rather than reinvention of Jaguar's iconic sports car, refining the original with improved cooling, open headlamps, and a revised cabin, all while retaining the sublime 4.2-litre twin-cam straight-six and that unmistakable silhouette. The changes were made principally for the lucrative American market, which had numerous safety requirements to meet.
Here we have a UK-market, right-hand drive Fixed Head Coupé first despatched from the factory on 27th June 1969 and originally supplied by Henlys Limited in Manchester via Collins Auto Company. Now finished in green with a tan interior, it shows 77,268 miles on the odometer, supported by a consistent recorded mileage history dating back over two decades.
Recent investment has been considerable, with nearly £4,650 of work carried out by Setford & Company in November 2025 encompassing a gearbox rebuild, cam cover gaskets and seals, a throttle linkage overhaul, new spark plugs, upper ball joint replacement, track rod renewal, and wheel alignment, along with interior refitting and a thorough degrease of the engine and underside. The vendor describes the car as beautiful to drive, smooth on the road, and a real head-turner, reporting no known faults.image.png1.35 MB

Not to be mistaken with the slightly ungainly 2+2 models, this Fixed Head Coupé E-Type retains the silhouette that makes the early cars oh-so desirable, and it's set off beautifully in the iconic hue of British Racing Green over Tan leather upholstery. As the photographs show, the Jag presents very well for its age, with a gentle patina that speaks of a car that's been used and enjoyed as its makers intended. The chrome finishes look very smart, including the wheels, while the paint presents well with some slight chips and other imperfections upon closer inspection. The photographs show a light dent in the nearside bodywork in front of the door, and there are a few signs of age to the wheel arches and sills, which can also be studied in the image gallery. The car's interior has undergone extensive work in late 2025, resulting in an exceedingly tidy cabin. A modern Pioneer DIN stereo is fitted.
Gearbox rebuilt in November 2025, including new gear lever gaiter, gearbox oil seal, and fresh gear oil
Cam cover gaskets, inlet cam cover seal, O-rings, oil filler cap seal, and housing gaskets replaced in November 2025
Throttle linkage removed, overhauled, and re-bushed to remove play in November 2025
Six new spark plugs fitted, distributor cap and rotor arm cleaned, and HT leads re-attached in November 2025
Upper ball joints replaced, correctly shimmed, and greased; track rod and boot replaced; wheel alignment adjusted in November 2025
Clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder replaced in June 2022
A manual 4.2-litre E-Type is arguably the model at its best. The 4.2-litre XK unit provided a welcome increase in torque over its 3.8-litre predecessor, while the later four-speed manual gearbox (as fitted to this car) features full synchromesh - a notable improvement over the notoriously tricky Moss boxes of early cars. As the accompanying invoices show, this Jag has received some notable recent mechanical work, including a gearbox rebuild in November 2025 along with several other important jobs, as detailed above. The vendor states that the car drives very well, ready for the new owner to enjoy.image.png1.15 MB BEFORE YOU BUY
