The Appeal
The KZ was a step change for Honda, the first of a new breed of DOHC bikes that set the template for what followed over the next few decades. Although it retained the classic ‘UJM’ look, the KZ was much more engaging and reliable than its predecessors. They remain both distinctive and very usable. All reasons why these classic Hondas are in demand with collectors.
It also explains why the current keeper of this 1980 example chose to bring it back to life after 20 years in dry storage. As the photos show, it arrived with him complete but in aged condition. He subsequently set about a comprehensive restoration that has just been completed. The work involved dismantling and rebuilding completed by a repaint in smart black with red pinstriping. We’re told that small part were refurbished and powder coated, the top end rebuilt and rebored, the wheels refurbished and fitted with new Avons and the carburettors cleaned and rebuilt. The calipers, swing arm and frame were also overhauled. All parts were supplied by Honda specialist David Silvers.
The bike retains its original specification aside from a 4-into-1 exhaust system. The vendor says that it starts on the button and simply needs to be out on the open road.
