The Appeal
Those that know their classic Lancias will be well aware that a right-hand drive Beta Spider is a rare find in any condition, let alone one so incredibly well-preserved as this 1981 car. The secret ingredient is the South African climate. This car has globe-trotted somewhat, with spells in the Netherlands and the Isle of Man, but it has spent most of its time garaged in Johannesburg, preserving its originality wonderfully.
The Lancia Beta Spider is among the most characterful open-top sports cars of its era. Penned by Pininfarina with a removable targa-style roof panel, it paired Italian design flair with a willing twin-cam engine and engaging road manners. As interest in 1970s and 1980s Lancia models continues to grow, well-kept examples such as this are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Our car was purchased new in Johannesburg, where it was always garaged. It accompanied its first keeper through moves to Holland and the Isle of Man, being officially registered in both, before returning to South Africa. The second keeper was her neighbour, who had long admired the car. The current vendor acquired it in 2020 and subsequently had it resprayed to address minor garage rash and some sun fading on the boot lid. As the photographs attest, it presents very well throughout, ready to meet its next keeper.IMG_4688.jpg1.35 MB
