Often credited as the car that saved Peugeot, the 205 was an immediate hit, with suave styling, plenty of space and a huge range of models and engines. The sporting models were also dynamically accomplished and benefited from the ‘halo effect’ of the 205 T16’s international rallying success. Yet the stripped-out specials such as the Rallye, designed for club racers, were equally successful, thanks to their nimble handling and light weight.
 
The UK-only 205 Rallye was transformed from the 1.4 XR it was based on, and took inspiration from the legendary homologation-special 205 Rallye. This car has since been significantly modified to make it also suitable for competition, with a stripped-out interior with bucket seats, full harnesses, bolt-in roll cage and rally equipment.
 
The 1.4-litre engine has been fitted with a fast road camshaft and Facet electronic fuel pump, while a front strut brace, Bilstein dampers and Eibach springs enhance the car’s roadholding ability. The seller reports only a few age-related marks to the exterior and interior. The very large file of paperwork that comes with the car is testament to how well it has been looked after.
 
The seller states: “This is a stand-out car, with great handling and a nippy engine”. It’s ready to be enjoyed right away, on the road and in competition, while its rarity will also turn heads.
