The Appeal
Among the final hand-built Aston Martins to emerge from the legendary Newport Pagnell works, the Vantage Le Mans V600 was a celebration of the marque's illustrious past. The car was conceived to honour the 40th anniversary of Aston Martin's triumph at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It featured bespoke aerodynamic bodywork, a 5.3-litre twin-supercharged V8 producing approximately 600 bhp, and the production run included just 40 cars.
This example, chassis 70241, was completed as a V550 Vantage Le Mans in July 1999 and converted to full V600 specification by Aston Martin Works Service at Newport Pagnell prior to delivery in June 2000. It is one of only 33 Le Mans cars believed to have received the official Works V600 upgrade, making it among the most desirable variants of an already rare model. Built to Swiss specification in left-hand drive, it was delivered new in Switzerland before passing to the State of Kuwait, where it was owned by the former Prime Minister, Sheikh Nasser Mohammed Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, as evidenced by the engraved initials on the door sill plates and a copy of the Aston Martin's technical passport, which lists him as the registered owner.
The car retains its original and highly sought-after colour combination of Aston Martin Racing Green over Tan Connolly leather with Forest Green piping, Tan Alcantara headlining and seat centres, and Green carpets. Around 2012, it was returned to Aston Martin Works Service for an automatic transmission conversion, a dashboard modification for a single-DIN head unit, and the addition of a third high-level brake light.
In 2024, the car underwent a comprehensive recommissioning at Aston Martin Works Heritage, with over £85,000 invested. The turn of the 21st century was a transitional period for Aston Martin, with the introduction of mass production to a firm that had traditionally hand-built small batches of cars. The Vantage Le Mans V600 is very much a hangover from the hand-built era, resulting in a car of incredible quality. Approximately 1,200 man-hours of labour go into each one.
Our example has covered minimal mileage, and its condition reflects this. It was entrusted to Aston Martin Works Heritage in 2024, which carried out an extensive inspection. The report found that the main vehicle structure was completely sound, with no corrosion or evidence of prior accident damage. The interior carpet and leather trim remained in good condition overall. Crucially, the cabin retained several rare, bespoke Le Mans-specification details, including the original map of Northern France, the factory torch housed in the centre armrest, and the original door entry sill plaques.
The report also identified some areas in need of a refresh; the work was actioned, and the princely sum of £85,000 was spent to bring the car back to its best. As the photographs attest, today, it presents in impeccable order throughout.
All brake calipers overhauled; all brake flexi hoses replaced
Steering rack removed and overhauled; full laser geometry alignment completed
Anti-roll bar drop link replaced with matching V600 specification parts; split bar to body rubbers replaced
Rear bump stops replaced; front shock absorber shrouds secured
Gearbox band adjusters sealed to external case; gearbox service completed
Air conditioning vacuum tested, recharged with R134a, and leak tested; receiver drier bottle replaced
Tyre inflation bottles replaced
During the July 2024 recommissioning at Aston Martin Works, the car's powertrain, fuel, and cooling systems underwent a comprehensive overhaul. Technicians removed and refurbished the main fuel tank, fitted new fuel pumps, replaced all eight fuel injectors, and renewed all vacuum and carbon canister lines.
The cooling system was refreshed with a recored radiator, an overhauled water pump, new auxiliary drive belts, a new coolant temperature sensor, and a replaced crankshaft damper seal. Mechanically, a 36-monthly major service was completed, replacing engine oil, differential oil, brake fluid, engine coolant, and charge cooler coolant, alongside full overhauls of the brake callipers, flexible hoses, and steering rack.
The chassis was dialled in with a full laser geometry alignment, updated V600-spec anti-roll bar drop links, new rear bump stops, and secured front shock shrouds. Finally, the automatic gearbox was serviced and its band adjusters sealed; the air conditioning was tested, recharged, and fitted with a new receiver-drier bottle; and new tyre inflation bottles were supplied.DSC06817.jpg8.33 MB BEFORE YOU BUY
