The Appeal
We’re going out on a limb here, but good as the E39 M5 is, the ultra-rare Alpina B10 is arguably the better real-world choice. It’s just as quick, engaging, and agile, yet it blends all that with a level of cosseting and comfort the M car simply cannot match. Alpina extensively reworked each car, notably stroking the engine to 4.6L, fitting a custom crankshaft, Mahle pistons, and a remap.
It’s also much rarer than the M5. Just 1,324 were built over six years, and only 277 were RHD examples like this handsome one. As a 2000 car, it has the later double VANOS version of that torquey M62-based 4.6L V8, which tweaks power to 347bhp. We are told it left the Sytner works costing close to £75,000 (164,000 now). The price was hiked by options like the Velvet Blue metallic paintwork applied to only 14 B10s, Nappa leather, and a high-end stereo.
In recent years, the car has been carefully stored and sparingly used as part of private collections. In 2025, it received a long list of work, including new Dunlop tyres, suspension bushes, a gearbox service, an MAF sensor, and new spark plugs. It received another service in August 2026 and comes to market with an MOT valid until February 2027.
You could have an E39 M5, or go one better and have the ultra-rare, fully rounded executive express that is Alpina’s brilliant B10. This is a great collector-quality example of these fine machines.
