The Appeal

The Mitsubishi Lancer WRC was the weapon of choice for one of rallying's all-time greats, Tommi Mäkinen, as the four-time World Rally Champion pursued further glory at the highest level of the sport. Chassis 4 is one of a very small number of Lancer WRCs built by Mitsubishi's works team, and it carries serious provenance: this is the car Mäkinen himself campaigned at the 2001 Telstra Rally Australia, and which Jani Paasonen later drove at the 2002 Neste Rally Finland.

Following its works career, the car entered private ownership in the UK and was used in four further national rallies. The current vendor has since invested in a thorough cosmetic and mechanical refresh. The exterior was entrusted to Normandales, the very company that painted these cars when they were originally built, for a repaint, with the factory livery faithfully reapplied in its period red, black and white colour scheme. Crucially, the interior and cockpit have been deliberately left untouched, retaining the character and patina of a genuine works rally car, right down to the OMP bucket seats bearing Mäkinen's name. Mechanically, the car has been inspected and checked over by Ronan McCrory of RMC Motorsport.

Now presented in tarmac specification, the car also comes with a rebuilt gravel kit, giving the next owner the flexibility to configure it for either surface, or simply to display it as one of the most evocative rally cars of its era. The vendor describes this as a car of outstanding condition and originality, and for collectors of significant rally machinery, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine Tommi Mäkinen works Evo.

This car has been repainted by Normandales, the original company responsible for painting Mitsubishi’s WRC cars. It features the period red, black and white factory livery with sponsorship decals, Mäkinen and Hantunen’s names, and ‘Tommi’ on the rear wing. The original cockpit has been preserved untouched, including the white Ralliart roll cage, OMP bucket seats, Sabelt harnesses and three-spoke OMP steering wheel. Completing the specification are white five-spoke Enkei wheels with Ralliart emblems, a spare wheel, and a rebuilt gravel kit supplied alongside its current tarmac specification.

Powered by a 2.0-litre 4G63 turbocharged engine, this Evolution VI is equipped with a six-speed sequential gearbox and Xtrac shift lever, alongside AP Racing brakes and Samco silicone hoses. The competition-focused cockpit features a MoTeC digital dash, Coralba rally computer, FireSense fire extinguisher and S.P.A. Design fire suppression system, while an exterior battery master switch completes the rally specification.
