The Appeal
Smart Brabus versions of the Coupe made their world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2004. Unlike the prototype before it, the production car utilised a heavily tuned version of the 698cc 3-cylinder turbocharged engine. Barbus also added a turbocharger cooler and modified electronics, lifting power output from 82hp to 101hp, for a top speed of 121mph in what is a very lightweight package.
Wider arches and sports suspension gave the car a more purposeful stance, further enhanced by Monoblock VI 17-inch alloys, a distinctive chin spoiler and centre-mounted twin rear-exit exhaust pipes.
The 6-speed automatic gearbox could be operated manually via Formula 1-style paddles on the steering wheel, and the interior cabin benefited from many of the Brabus upgrades. Only about 1,500, or so, Roadsters were sold. We don't know how many RHD's were sold in the UK, but they were a rare sight on our roads when new, so finding a low-mileage example now requires considerable patience.
This particular example is presented in an elegant shade of metallic silver, complemented by a
black fabric roof panel, black alloys (rears being deep dish) and finished with a black leather-trimmed interior. With low mileage and a long MOT, this would make a tantalising addition to any collection… and only takes up half the space!
