1980 Mercedes-Benz 450 SE

  • Recently recommissioned after 20 years off the road
  • Loads of early history and MOTs
  • Resprayed in original gold
  • New sills
  • Fresh MOT
  • Drives well

The Mercedes-Benz W116 was one of the finest cars in the world, if not the very best, when it debuted in 1972. Over-engineered and wonderfully appointed, it was the epitome of luxury and mechanical integrity.

It was also a car with huge presence, beloved of celebrities, gangsters and public figures. This example was found earlier this year by the vendor, having stood in a garage in Yorkshire for the best part of two decades.

He’s since had loads of work carried out on it to get it back to running and road legal order. A lot of the work is done – it’s now ready for a new owner to take it to the next level.

  • Mot until April 2023
  • Lots of early history
  • Original manuals and service books
  • Service history to 74k

There’s a box of paperwork with the car that tells a story of its early life, with the previous two owners (one in the early 1970s and another in the 1980s) both sharing their names with well-known actors from the north of England.

There’s no proof to suggest the car had celebrity ownership, but it’s worth looking into further given the profile of the average W116 buyer and given the fact it was registered from new on the prestigious plate 'DN 4' you can be certain that it was someone important if it wasn't a celebrity!

The car also has two sets of keys, a Mercedes-Benz Owners’ Manual, service book and some early bills. The service book is stamped all the way to 74,000 miles in 1986, suggesting the car has only covered 20,000 miles in the past 36 years.

  • Brown velour
  • Period stereo
  • Needs some trimming work

Overall, the interior is in sound and complete condition but there will be some further recommissioning required.

The dash, door cards and headlining are excellent and the controls and switches all work as they should, while the carpets are also good. The driver’s seat is also in fair order, but there are areas of the cabin where the seat fabric has deteriorated in storage, most likely moth-eaten or possibly eaten by mice.

The edges of the rear seats and the bottom of the passenger seat have holes in the fabric that will generally require the work of a trimmer if you’re concerned about such things, or you can wait for good used items to turn up as none of them affect the usability of the car.

  • Recent new respray
  • Two new sills
  • Original wheel trims
  • Complete and straight

The vendor has just spent quite a bit of money having the 450SE put back on the road, which included getting both sills replaced and the rest of the car’s underside cleaned up and rust proofed.

It’s an imposing car to look at and it appears very smart from all angles in a fresh coat of paint. It's by no means a perfect finish, but it's presentable and most of the chrome trim is in a presentable condition also.

It is missing two of the chrome finishing strips from beneath both doors, though, and there’s some tarnishing to the rear screen surrounds. The front bumper is also slightly angled, but it doesn’t jump out at you.

A couple of the doors have corrosion to the inner door frame and while this isn’t structural, you may want to think about cosmetic repairs in the fullness of time.

The Mercedes-Benz bonnet badge is included and needs refitting, while the original body-matched wheel trims are present and correct.

  • 4.5 V8
  • Three-speed auto transmission
  • Starts and runs

The 4,520cc V8 engine starts well and appears to run fine, holding good oil pressure.

It has just been put back on the road after a very long lay-up, so has had a full oil and filter service as well as work to the brakes and steering components.

The vendor says that it drives well with no major issues revealed over the milage he’s covered in the car.

This is a great opportunity to get your hands on a really straight and usable example of the iconic W116, and it’s the best spec (aside from the ultra-rare 6.9).

The current owner has done most of the hard work required to return it to the road after years of slumber and the next owner will have the chance to take it to the next level, knowing that the hard work has already been done.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you’re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
