The Appeal
The K100 aimed to beat the Japanese at their own game: a supremely capable, extremely well made bike that was ultra reliable. As the reputation of these versatile bikes shows, BMW achieved all three goals. The K100 works as a cross-country sports bike and a long distance road trip tourer.
This very low mileage K100 RS is fitted with sports suspension so leans on the sporting edge of this bike’s wide abilities, although the topbox and panniers also hint at its long-distance skills. It is in remarkable condition, clear evidence of careful owners and a life spent on dry weather runs. The service history supports this impression with a clean run of MOTs right back to MOT with not one advisories. Versatile, reliable and cared for, this is an opportunity to buy a great example of a great bike.

The Condition
Attractive Caribic Blue paintwork with contrasting black on engine, frame, forks, exhaust and trim
Remarkable condition for a 36 year old bike with only very minor cosmetic blemishes
RS was the sporting variant with fixed fairing and lower handlebars
Optional topbox and BMW quickly detachable panniers
Alloy wheels with quality Avon Roadrider tyres in good condition
The K100 could only be a BMW – sober, handsome and stylish it communicates capability and purpose. The attractive Caribic Blue metallic paintwork of this 36 year old bike is in remarkable condition, reflecting the remarkably low mileage.
There are only a few minor detractions reflecting its age. On the nearside there are scuffs around the vent cowling above the engine but otherwise the paintwork appears to be in excellent condition. We detected a possible stone chip on the top of the tank, but as this is not obvious in other photographs it may be a trick of the light.
Elsewhere there are scuffs on the exhaust tail pipe and there is a crease on the offside of the seat. There appears to be a small, touched-in scratch on the nearside mirror and a couple of stone chips on the front of the fairing.
The attractive alloy wheels are in very good, unmarked condition and are fitted with quality Avon Roadrider tyres, which have good tread.
The bike is fitted with a top box and BMW quick-release and attach panniers.
The Mechanics
4cyl 987cc BMW engine developing a healthy 88bhp
Innovative flat plane layout with crankshaft in line with the frame to improve efficient transfer of power to the wheel
Engine layout provides low centre of gravity for improved handling
Factory specified with sport suspension
Extensive service history including full service at 9,200 miles and oil and filter change within last year
High specification including front and rear disc brakes
Gel type battery fitted to replace traditional acid one
The K100’s sober-suited styling may have earned it the nickname ‘the flying brick’ but any detractors quickly melted away when they rode one. The clever engine layout – it lies flat across the frame with the crankshaft in line with the pipework – provides a very low centre of gravity that delivers superb handling. To dial up the sporting credentials, this bike was factory specified with BMW’s sports suspension.
The engine design and specification provides a very BMW-like level of reliability. It is arguably as good as if not superior to contemporary Japanese bikes, which were the 1980s quality benchmark. It is married to a 5spd BMW sequential gearbox, which in RS specification came with taller gearing.
This bike’s exceptionally low mileage is supported by its impeccable MOT history. Going back to 2006 it has never had an advisory and has covered less than 5,000 miles in that time. The history file includes a stamped service book and invoices for service and maintenance parts. It appears to have been last fully serviced at 9,200 miles in August 2019 when all fluids were changed, the radiator was flushed, brake hoses replaced and the transmission shaft splines cleaned and regreased. The Seller states that he has completed an intermediate oil and filter change within the last year.
Summary
The K100 was BMW’s highly capable weapon in the assault on the hegemony of Japanese bikes. Versatile, very well built and extremely reliable, it was also rewarding to ride thanks to that innovative engine and low centre of gravity.
This is a rare opportunity to buy a virtually factory-fresh K100. The extremely low mileage is supported by its excellent condition and comprehensive service history. Then there is that perfect run of MOTs back to 2006. With summer threatening to return this bike is surely perfect for a sunny road trip or a series of weekend getaways.

About Max Bids
The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.
Anti-sniping
C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.
Auto-bidding increments
If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
