The Appeal
Many panel vans grace the UK roads, but there is only one van that has a cult-like following. That is of course the Volkswagen Transporter. Since the original split-screen vans up to the newest T7 Transporter, the model has always been the pinnacle of panel vans.
This example has been looked after by the previous owners, it is thanks to this care that it now runs very well indeed for its age. With an empty rear compartment, this Transporter could be turned into a beautiful, off-grid retro camper.
The History and Paperwork
- First hitting the roads in 1990
- It was more than likely a delivery van in its early years
- The earliest paperwork that is present is from 2000 from VW Bournemouth
- Some paperwork from the early noughties documents routine maintenance
- There are a lot of old MOT certificates present
- The current owners acquired the van in 2018 from a VW nut
- It’s this previous owner who changed the engine
- Throughout the current ownership, the van has asked for very little
- You will be able to find the majority of the paperwork in the gallery below
- It is now your chance to get behind the wheel of this retro van
- As it’s a blank canvas inside, you can turn it into whatever you want
The Interior
- Inside this Transporter is very functional
- Upfront the two cloth seats are in very good condition
- There are no rips or tears to this fabric
- You couldn’t tell the mileage from looking at these seats, they’ve aged well
- Its functional black dashboard presents with no cracks or obvious damage
- As it’s been a work vehicle for some of its life you may wish to overhaul the front portion of the cabin
- This will really put your individual stamp on your new Transporter
- The original steering wheel has been replaced with a fetching aftermarket example
- A set of Edge aftermarket speakers are set into the original door cards
- These weren’t tested on the day but should make long journeys more comfortable
- Let’s now turn our attention to the large rear load space
- It is here where the interior of the van has bags of potential
- You could keep it the same and use it as a head-turning marketing tool
- Or you could turn it into something totally different
- A lot of these vans are now being turned into cool campers to explore the world
- Whatever you wish to do it should be a solid example to start with
- Overall, the interior is in good condition, its functional cabin and large load space should be everything you need
The Exterior
- Externally its quirky design is definitely head-turning today
- You can quickly fall in love with its boxy 90s design
- The white paint is in good condition on the whole
- However, you may spot some areas of surface rust that have come through the paint
- These hopefully shouldn’t be too difficult to rectify
- It sits on four Speedwell alloys
- These alloys appear to be in good condition with no large areas of curb rash
- They are shod in a set of tyres with good tread left
- From a quick visual inspection, the underside seems to be nice and clean
- Overall, the exterior of this Transporter is in good condition
- You may wish to see to a few areas of surface corrosion, but apart from these areas it is a nice looking van
The Mechanics
- This Transporters mechanics appear to be in very good condition for its age/mileage
- Its previous owner, a VW nut, had the engine replaced
- Since then, the current owners have completed around 5,000 miles
- Thanks to the new engine this van now drives very well
- On the day of the photos, the van was taken on a 15-20 minute drive out to the location
- It started straight up from cold and ran well throughout the drive
- No crunches were present from the manual gearbox, and it shifted smoothly
- There were no loud knocks/bangs from the suspension either
- This Transporter is from a time of simple mechanical engineering, which should be easy to keep on top of
- Don’t let the odometer reading put you off of this van, it ran really well when we were present
