THE APPEAL

The TVR 400SE is the ultimate British-built muscle car from an era when angular styling and brutal performance were the order of the day.

Launched in 1988, and featuring a 275 bhp V8, the 400-series was probably the best looking of all the ‘wedge’ cars and was a great success for TVR in the showrooms and on the track.

Built in late 1991, this particular 2-seater 400SE represents one of the last ‘wedge’ shape cars to leave the Blackpool factory and is believed to be number 222 out of 242 produced.

Boasting a comprehensive service file and looking resplendent in metallic Mica Blue and complimentary magnolia and blue leather, J400 SEE exudes classic TVR styling and offers all the sports car performance you will ever need.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  •  Current owner for last 24 years
  •  MOT until August 2022
  •  Comprehensive service history

This glorious 400SE was purchased new from TVR specialists David Hendry Cars, Wiltshire, and registered on the 8th July 1992.

It appears that each of the five former owners enjoyed one year’s worth of fun until the current owner fulfilled a boyhood dream to own a ‘Big Wedge’, and acquired it from Hawthorns Cars Ltd, Farnham, on the 26th March 1998.

A comprehensive history file includes the V5, TVR Owners Handbook and Service book with 11 regular TVR service stamps and invoices until 48,086 miles.

Invoices support the diligent servicing that has subsequently been carried out by independent specialists including Peninsula Automotive Ltd, Devon and TVRSSW, Somerset.

During the last 24 years, the current owner has driven around 24,000 exhilarating miles until the arrival of his children from 2009 when the car was largely laid up in his dry garage until 2019.

He then entrusted Southways Automotive, Hampshire, to re-commission it, so consequently it is now ready to roar down the road again.

The ‘Pass’ MOT is valid until the 4th August 2022 and the tax is currently on SORN.

The private registration plate will be included in the sale along with the original seat belts, rectangular headlights and roof storage bag.

THE INTERIOR

  •  Great dashboard and instrumentation
  •  Luxurious leather upholstery
  •  Safety roll bar

The ergonomic cabin is a driver's delight and has the later ‘wraparound’ dash.

The blue and magnolia leather is in good condition as are the wood fascias which were replaced or refurbished by London Carriage Craft in 2013.

The comprehensive set of gauges, warning lights and switchgear are presentable as is the stylish wooden Momo steering wheel. An immobiliser is de-activated via the steering column and an Alpine sound system is neatly fitted.

We are assured that all the essential electrical equipment functions correctly although the fuel gauge has stopped working. The tank was left empty over the winter, so a sticking float may be to blame.

The full leather seats are good, having been re-trimmed a few years ago, and the door trims are fine, although the door handle arm rests are a little scuffed (see photos). The carpeting is described as “excellent” and the leather lined roof panel is fine.

For safety, the owner commissioned a custom-made, and very apt-looking roll bar which has been professionally installed with welded re-enforcing plates and bolts, and for added safety, Willans four-point harnesses are securely fitted along with a fire extinguisher.

The tidy and fully carpeted boot space contains an unused space saver spare wheel, wheel brace and jack, and roof storage bag.

THE EXTERIOR

  •  Original Mica Blue paintwork
  •  Some paint chips
  •  Refurbished wheels

This distinctive bodywork looks very straight and free from any major imperfections.

The original metallic Mica Blue really suits the ‘wedge’ and the owner describes it as “honest” with some “spiders” and micro-blistering in the fibreglass. Lights, glass, mirrors and trim, are presentable.

There are a smattering of stone chips around the whole car, door edges and some scratches on the rear bumper (see photos). These have not worried the owner as he has “always enjoyed the car to drive”. The upgraded pop-up lights operate well but the drivers door has dropped slightly and the door lock is faulty.

The clean tubular chassis is, in the owner's words, “in fair condition”. The powder coating is present on the tubes and outriggers, and at the last MOT, the tester reckoned there was around 6-8 years left before a replacement chassis may be necessary. The dual fuel tanks have some surface rust but are sound.

The easily removable targa roof panel and folding roof are in good condition and the recently refurbished (and very shiny) 15” 2-piece alloy wheels set this car off a treat and are shod with new Toyo T1R 225/50 R15 tyres all round.

THE MECHANICS

  •  Well maintained V8
  •  Some new parts
  •  Amazing performance

This reliable V8 power-plant sits in an extremely clean well maintained engine compartment.

Developing 275 bhp at 5,500 rpm and with 270 ft/Lbs of torque at 3,500 rpm, this 3,948cc engine should propel you from 0-60 in around 5.6 seconds with a top speed of 145 mph.

A new Lucas Mass Airflow Sensor and starter motor have been fitted recently and a Powerflow stainless steel exhaust was added a while ago. The last major service was attended to by Southways Automotive in 2019 just a handful of miles ago.

The 5-speed gearbox, steering, suspension and vented disc brakes are said to be responsive and the owner comments that acceleration is “like a scalded cat!”, it roars at higher revs and will “pop and bang” on the run-over.

SUMMARY

The owner will be sad to see his beloved TVR go, but family commitments and work now limit his ability to enjoy it, so it needs a new home.

This rare convertible TVR 400SE is definitely a head-turner and goes like the clappers.

Cosmetically speaking, there is some room for improvement if you wish, but mechanically, it should be on the button - go have some fun!

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 5-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
