1993 Land Rover Defender Tithonus 110

Vendor supplied images

Highlights

  • One of the pre-Wolf coil-sprung Land Rovers to be selected for Project Tithonus
  • Acquired by the vendor from an MoD disposal site in 2020, making them the only civilian owner
  • Currently equipped with a civilian-spec N/A 2.5-litre diesel engine although a military block, cylinder head and various ancillaries are also included in the sale

The Appeal

Following the introduction of the Defender Wolf in 1994, the Ministry of Defence invested in a scheme to extend the life of existing coil-sprung military Land Rovers by refurbishing them to field standard. Named Project Tithonus, this initiative effectively extended the service life of these vehicles by thirty years and here we have one such Defender that received this treatment.

First entering military service in 1993, this Land Rover has spent the majority of its life with the MoD until the present owner acquired it from an MoD disposal site in 2020. Since then, we understand that the Land Rover has been used mainly for local journeys and the vendor amassed a number of parts, including an original MoD engine, intending to carry out some renovation work. In the end, this plan didn’t come to fruition and so, the Defender is now in need of a new home.

With an MOT valid until September 2023 with no advisories, this Land Rover is ready to be enjoyed in its present state or could become the basis for a project.

The History and Paperwork

  • Entered military service on 22nd November 1993 - with correspondence from the MoD confirming this
  • Updated during Project Tithonus
  • Acquired by the vendor from an MoD disposal site in 2020, making them the first civilian owner
  • V5C present
  • MOT valid until September 2023
  • The vendor amassed a number of parts, which accompany the Land Rover
  • Around 1,800 miles covered during present ownership

The Interior

  • Seating for eight overall
  • Spartan and fit for purpose
  • Retains its rubber floor mats which also line the inside of the bulkhead
  • The front seats exhibit a little wear with a few splits to the squab on the driver’s side
  • The seat frames are a little corroded but appear structurally sound
  • We noticed a little corrosion in the footwells, but they appear fundamentally solid
  • Retains a spade affixed between the two front occupants
  • The dashboard appears in good condition, with some wear and scratches as one would expect to see
  • Mobile phone holder added atop the dash
  • USB sockets, a cup holder and a reversing camera have also been added
  • In the rear, we find a mixture of additional seating with single ‘Observer’ chairs forward, and conventional benches aft
  • The rear flooring is lined in heavy duty ribbed rubber matting
  • Hazmat internal canvas hood liner
  • The door frames exhibit some corrosion in the corners although the vendor informs us that repair sections are supplied along with the other parts
  • A blank canvas upon which the next owner can exercise their own creativity, or else, enjoy in its current military state

The Exterior

  • Military drab green
  • Wolf-style rollover cage - a Project Tithonus upgrade
  • The canvas tilt appears in really good condition
  • Outdoor Stormforce cover provided, with a few small areas of damage but still serviceable
  • Military-spec sliding windows
  • For an ex-military Land Rover, the bodywork is quite straight, with just a few fairly insignificant blemishes
  • The paint presents quite well overall, with a few scratches
  • Storage boxes let into the sides as is often seen on military Land Rovers
  • So far as we could see, the chassis looks to be very sound with just a smattering of surface corrosion in a few spots
  • The bulkhead seems in good order, as does the rear crossmember
  • Tread plate affixed to the front wing tops, sill plates and the rear crossmember
  • Equipped with a bull bar on the front bumper
  • Military-spec enlarged indicators and sidelights
  • Still has its military registration plates alongside the civilian ones
  • Wolf wheels, including a bonnet-mounted spare

The Mechanics

  • 2.5-litre civilian N/A diesel engine
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Low range and four-wheel drive
  • Equipped with a heavy duty clutch
  • The exhaust system is fairly new
  • Runs and drives well according to the vendor
  • The electrical system passes MOT requirements although the reversing camera, reversing lights,  spotlights, instruments and heater all need some work (with the heater having been removed for inspection)
  • MoD block and cylinder head supplied, should the next owner wish to fit the correct engine
  • Also included are a number of ancillaries including a water pump, fan, injection parts and a 24 volt alternator with its bracketry
  • We’re informed that two swivel rebuild kits will be supplied as well

Summary

We can see a lot of potential in this Land Rover and, with all the additional parts that are included, the next owner is already well on the way with any fixes or modifications they may wish to make.

Presented in very good condition for its age and with an MOT valid until September 2023, don’t miss out on this excellent opportunity.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you’re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
