The Appeal

You’d be easily fooled at a glance thinking this was the same as the previous model of the Maserati Spyder, but you’d be pretty sorely mistaken. It’s in fact a whole 25cm shorter, and houses a new Ferrari built engine and a proper improvement in build quality - allowing the Spyder to hold its own against competition like the 911 and Jaguar XKR, offering an attractive alternative. Italian engineering never fails to impress, and the Spyder Cambiocorsa is sure to make your hair stand on end with excitement.

This particular example is presented in excellent condition, with a comprehensive service history and low mileage displayed on the clocks. These Spyders have quickly become collector cars, holding rock solid value and seen to appreciate over the last few years. The seller also states that they would possibly be able to assist with the registration, transportation, or storage of the vehicle should a new custodian require any help.

The Interior

  • Nero leather interior
  • Giallo Granturismo accents through the dashboard
  • Completely original throughout
  • Very gentle and charming signs of use

With any vehicle that wears the name ‘Maserati’ proudly on its panels, we expect opulence and elegance hand over fist - and this Spyder delivers. Presented in excellent condition with only very gentle hints of age and use, it adds a charming flair, showing the vehicle has had an enjoyable life and not been hidden away in storage units. Each tiny imperfection holds a story, and is what makes it even more perfect in our eyes.

Starting by opening the drivers side door, the Nero leather interior is a welcoming and homely place to be. The driver seat is very well presented, showing only the normal signs of use such as gentle creases on the bolsters, however no cracks are noticed and no tears are present. The stitching appears to be completely intact, and the electronic controls all function as they should. The passenger seat also remains in fantastic condition with even less signs of use, the leather remains supple and the stitching beautifully kept.

Directly in front of the driver seat, the steering wheel is handsomely presented with perforated leather on the inside of the three and nine o'clock positions. The shifter paddles are also bound in perforated leather, with both the ‘UP’ and ‘DOWN’ paddles showing some gentle signs of use. Behind the steering wheel, the gauges show no unwelcome signs of warning lights upon startup, and the gauges themselves remain easy to read with no damage, displaying that low mileage odometer.  Moving across the dashboard, the leather upholstery remains well maintained, and the centre console controls all remain entirely functional - the buttons however do show some signs of use as to be expected, they’re one of the most tactile areas of any car.

The driver side door card exhibits some very gentle signs of age with a couple of marks in the leatherwork, however nothing which we would consider off-putting. The carpets are all original and are presented in good condition with the usual signs of use, and the  interior of the convertible top is reported to be in great shape with no damage present.

An excellently maintained Spyder, with some charming hints of use. Collectors cars like these are often wasted and hidden away from the world, it’s heartwarming to see this dashing bit of kit has actually been enjoyed and used in the way the opulent automakers intended.

The Exterior

  • Original Giallo Granturismo paintwork
  • Straight and true bodywork
  • Factory fitting panel gaps
  • Original wheels
  • Drop-top reportedly in excellent shape

The Spyder is a handsome thing. Italian penmanship on paper comes to life with the lines of the Maserati, a low-slung roadster that is not only pleasing on the eye, but also gets your heart racing and commands all of your senses.

Starting at the front, the paintwork appears to be well presented with just the normal signs of stone chips, and a very gentle scuff just above the brightwork grill on the bodyline. The brightwork itself appears excellent with no signs of pitting or tarnishing, and the mesh grill appears corrosion free. Both of the headlamp lenses appear clear with no signs of fading or sun damage, and the panel gaps up front all seem to be of factory fitment.

Moving around to the side of the Spyder, the paintwork is nicely kept with just some small signs of use such as some chips around the front passenger side arch just behind the wheel, and some marks behind the rear wheels on the very lowest part of the bumper. Aside from this, the panels are in excellent shape with good shut lines, and there appears to be no visible corrosion that we can find. The original wheels are all in good shape with no harsh damage, just some light scratching around the outer rims, nothing that wouldn’t be an easy fix!

To the rear of the lovely Maserati, the paintwork appears in lovely condition, with the original Maserati logo sitting proudly on the bootlid in handsome condition. The four tailpipes show no signs of corrosion, and both rear lights appear free from damage and retain excellent colour, functioning properly as you would expect. Raising the convertible top, we’re told that the mechanism functions without any issues and that the fabric top is in great condition with no rips or tears.

Overall, a very handsomely presented example that has evidently been cared for over the years - very few and gentle hints of use show themselves, ensuring total originality throughout.

The Mechanics

  • Ferrari-built 4.2-litre V8 petrol engine
  • 390 BHP and 334 lb-ft of torque
  • 6-speed automated manual F1 transmission
  • Rear-wheel drive configuration
  • 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds
  • Comprehensive service history

Arguably one of the best and most enjoyable drivers cars you can spend your money on, the Cambiocorsa makes for an exceptional tourer. Fitted with a Ferrari-built V8 engine that excites your senses every time you blip the throttle, along with an excellently balanced chassis, this is a car you’ll find difficult to get out of the driver seat.

This car is accompanied with a comprehensive service history, being serviced repeatedly with Sportgarage Leirer AG of Switzerland, a Ferrari dealer where the vehicle was originally purchased. This only changed when the car was sent for export, where it was then serviced at Maserati Warsaw back in 2018. It may be advisable to give the vehicle another service upon receipt just to keep yourself and the car in check.

The engine is reported in excellent mechanical health with no known issues, it has proved itself to be a reliable lump over the years and produces its power effortlessly and in a predictable linear fashion as you would expect. The gearbox is very much the same, no known mechanical problems and no unwelcome whining noises at speed or under load - the F1 style gearbox makes for a much more engaging driving experience than your everyday automatic, forcing you to instruct the car which gear to select and when to select it, much like a regular manual but without the hassle of a clutch pedal. Brakes remain excellent with a confidence-inspiring amount of biting force, no hair raising grinding noises present, and the handling remains as tight and precise as you would expect of a high-performance Italian roadster.

Summary

These Maseratis are known to hold their own against much of their two-seated competition, not only in terms of looks and luxury, but also in terms of performance and driving capability. Why buy a 911 when you could be enjoying one of these lesser seen beauties?

Proving themselves recently as a proper modern classic, with low build volume and excellent aesthetics, you shouldn’t be twiddling your thumbs if you’re looking for a handsome Italian sportster which will have you grinning ear to ear.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you\'re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
