EXTERIOR
This striking 2002 tii is finished in its factory colour, Golf Yellow. Despite having been restored a number of years ago the bodywork still presents to an excellent standard, with only very light patina to report on close inspection. The 2002’s clean lines are accentuated with unmarked brightwork and even panel gaps all round. Both front and rear bumpers display a lovely mirror shine and the rubbers are still notably fresh throughout. The twin front headlights ensure a commanding presence out on the road.
INTERIOR
The interior retains all the classic charm you could hope to find within a ‘70s BMW. The simple dash is well appointed with wood inlays, textured vinyl, and an analogue BMW clock. An unobtrusive Sony head unit was fitted in the late ‘90s but aside from that the cabin is pleasingly period-correct. The seats are upholstered in supple black leather that has aged extremely well. The carpets, dash, and trim are also in fine fettle with no signs of any damage. In the boot you’ll find a tailored carpet mat beneath which the spare wheel, tool roll, and a selection of replacement parts can be found.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The under-bonnet area still looks impressive having also been subject to restorative work. The fuel-injected two-litre engine was fully rebuilt during the car’s restoration, and has covered a mere 32k miles since. On closer inspection the engine and ancillary parts all present to a great standard without appearing overly dressed. Unsurprisingly the car performs well on test, starting up first turn of the key and idling up to temperature without fuss. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via the smooth four-speed gearbox.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The tii sits on 13-inch BMW light alloy wheels wrapped in a matching set of Toyo 330 tyres, which are designed specifically for cars of a certain vintage. The wheels appear in excellent condition all round with a bright finish, original centre caps, and almost no signs of any curb marking. All the tyres have plenty of tread remaining and the brakes appear in fine fettle.
HISTORY FILE
The tii was first registered in November 1975. From 1987-1989 it was subject to a detailed restoration by the previous keeper, who went on to own the car for 28 years. The restorative work – both mechanical and cosmetic – is well documented in the paperwork, with almost all parts appearing to have been sourced directly from BMW. Once complete, the 2002 went on to win several awards at various concours events throughout the nineties. During this time a journal was also used to record the date and mileage of all maintenance carried out following on from the rebuild.
In the History File you’ll find a large stack of BMW and Specialist invoices detailing the car’s restoration work and subsequent maintenance, a raft of MOT certificates dating back to 1989, concours event judging sheets and awards, a 2002 owner’s manual, a 2002 workshop manual, and the hand-written logbook documenting all maintenance carried out over a 26-year period.
