PEUGEOT 205 1. 6 GTI
We have just spent the last seven months painstakingly recommissioning this iconic 205 GTI. Purchased from an engineer in Northern Ireland who bought this as his weekend project for him and his wife to enjoy eventually. Sadly for him numerous work placements overseas meant that he was never going to be able to give it the time and attention it deserved to finish it in a timely manner, so we hopped on the ferry and went and purchased it from him!
A 1995 registered vehicle, with only 2 former keepers from new and 120k miles
The base car was very good to start with and required no major remedial works other than replacing the two lower rear wing panels (they had no rust in them but did have a few dents so we thought it easier to replace with fresh metal rather than filling and repairing the panel) this ensures a nicer finish.
All of the external trim was removed, as were the front and rear screens and we then spent a week removing all the bad old paint and took every panel of the car back to bare metal. At the same time we also removed all the interior trim (save for the dashboard) . The car was given a coat of guide primer to show up any imperfections in the paint and a month later we had a fully painted shell and panels. Once the paint had settled it was then three days being correctly flatted and polished and I must say I am very pleased with the finish. Its now had a month to settle and there is no sinkage in the paint - always a good sign!!
After this all the screens and trim were refitted and the plastic wheel arches and bumpers have been refurbished with the correct textured paint and all the red striping in all bumpers and door trims replaced with brand new items - this is a fortune by the way ! wouldn’t fancy buying anymore but it finishes the car nicely. I also purchased new badges for the rear wings and boot panel, again rather expensive but really finishes the car off. New foglights and front and rear washer nozzles were amongst the other external items changed as well as fresh metal door locks. The alloy wheels have been freshly powder coated and new uniroyal tyres fitted on the front.
Whilst I had all the interior trim removed I took the opportunity to refurbish some of the plastic trim that looked a little tired, the boot mat was replaced and the side carpets inside the boot recovered also. All the speakers were removed and upgraded with modern pioneer items that sit behind the original grilles but still sound great! I managed to find an original half leather interior and a set of door cards in unbelievably good condition but I did have to purchase the car that they were attached to so turned out a little dearer than what i thought in the end!! The carpets were also removed and steam cleaned before being refitted which have come up very well also.
Finally we have given the car a thorough mechanical refresh which includes a large service, new battery, plugs, filters and all the fluids as well as changing the cam belt and waterpump and fitting new brake lines too. A vibration at lower speed was attributed to a worn engine mounting so this has been dealt with also!
