SUMMARY

Bought new in 1992 and delivered to the customers retirement property in Cyprus, this beautiful Mercedes 190D is finished in 568 Signal red with quite rare Red cloth; this is somewhat of a marmite choice, that you’ll either love it or hate, but it’s certainly different, and does set the car apart from those with more staid colour combinations. It also strangely seems to have the ability to win over those who are initially skeptical about the colour combination.

It was kept in the sunny climes of Cyprus until the owner sadly fell into ill health in 1994, after which he and his wife returned to the UK, along with the car, where it was parked, virtually unused in a garage. The gentleman sadly passed away in 1995, and the car was subsequently sold by his widow to a Mercedes Club Member, who fully re-commissioned the vehicle, using it mainly as a show car. He then sold the car some years later to customer of mine, who religiously garaged it throughout his six year tenure, before agreeing to sell it to me last year; this was very reluctant decision for him, however it was somewhat forced by the fact that the integral garage the car was housed in, was due to be converted into another room, and he’d concluded that as the car was far too nice to leave outside, he really had no choice but to let it go.

The specification of this car can be viewed as either complete madness or utter genius depending on your point of view, but whichever way you look at it, it’s totally unique, and in today’s world of vehicles controlled by multiple and often fallible electronic overlords, it’s a refreshing and very welcome change to find a vehicle that simply relies on just fuel to power it. With the exception of a few of the usual relays for the lights, wipers etc, there’s not one single ECU in this car, there’s also no central locking, no electric windows, no sunroof (electric or otherwise) in fact the only electrical refinements afforded to it are the electrically adjusting passenger mirror and an electric aerial. This, I think, makes this the ultimate apocalypse car, and come the day when all cars around it are dying their inevitable “electrical deaths”, this car, like an automotive cockroach, will keep on going, further helped by the fact that being a super stoic old school Mercedes Diesel, should it ever come to it, it will run perfectly well on most things resembling oil!.

On the road this W201 is an absolute delight, with adequate power to comfortably keep up with modern traffic, which is further aided by the slick 5sp gearbox (don’t believe everything you’ve heard about these manual gearboxes); which allows the driver to get the most from the engine, and also gives the car longer legs for motorway cruising. However, the big bonus here is the fuel economy is incredible for a car of its age, consistently averaging around 50 mpg.

Condition, as you’d expect of such a cosseted low mileage vehicle and one that’s spent the majority of its life in dry environments, is both incredible and immaculate, both on top and underneath, and has clearly never seen a welding torch. There are lots of W201’s for sale out there, which look overtly good on the surface, with many of them misguidedly described as “rust free”, but underneath, it can be a very different (and nasty) story; you have to bear in mind that even the newest W201 is now 25 years old, and as good as these car are (most Fords of this age have dissolved by now), a lot can happen in that time. I’ve been specialising in Mercedes of this era, particularly the W201 190 for nearly 15 years now, and I’ve seen many cars described as “mint” be an absolute mess underneath.

So, if you want one of the best examples of a Mercedes W201 out there or you’re simply just sick and tired of modern cars with their complex electronics and random warning lights, and yearn for something less complex, but incredibly well engineered, and as a result, is probably one of the most reliable car on the planet, then this is it. I’ve really enjoyed having this car, there’s something about these old Mercedes diesels that make them so incredibly addictive; just ask anyone who’s owned one; they will invariably agree but won’t be able to explain why!.

OLDER DIESEL & PETROL CARS

Let's address the elephant in the room here regarding the future of Diesel and older Petrol cars, which due to the confusion that our government have created with their unclear information, further stoked up and sensationalised by the press, has caused much unnecessary uncertainty, particularly and somewhat unfairly for once popular diesel cars, and to some degree older petrol cars too. You still also have to consider for what you put in, and and what you get out, the diesel engine is still more efficient than electric, hybrid & petrol engines, so I think, still has a future.

Having spoken with quite a few people in "The Know" here's the way both they and I see the future for older cars:

* Diesel and Petrol cars are NOT going to be totally banned by 2040, they're simply going to stop being made, but you'll still be able to drive them if you're lucky enough to be around (and able to drive) then! Also by that time, all these cars will be over 40 years old, so will, by that time will enjoy Classic Status and be both Tax & MOT exempt anyway!.

* Road Tax; anything registered pre March 2001 regardless of engine size and type, will pretty much be left as it is, i. e two bands, one for under 1. 4 litre and the other for over 1. 4 litres. I’m led to believe that any big VED changes to vehicles this old, will be regarded as retrospective taxation, so very unlikely to happen.

* Banning Old Diesel & Petrol Cars from City Centres - This may well come, but who wants to drive in a City Centre anyway; it's awful and very unpleasant, and parking costs a fortune!. However, the parody here is that once a car becomes 40 years old (in the UK) as well as becoming Tax & MOT exempt, it also becomes exempt from both The Congestion Charge and the ULEZ Charge; a policy which will probably be mirrored, as these low emission zones spring up across the country's cities.

* It has to be considered that older vehicles, like this 190D are foremostly classics, and there’s so few cars of this age surviving, that they’re not really regarded as part of the problem anyway, so I think any future hikes in taxation rates will come more particularly for post March 2005, as these are where the main volume of pre- Euro 4/ 5 diesels lie.

* Finally, something that is conveniently ignored by the "Green Element" among others, is the fact that a vast proportion of a vehicle's Carbon Footprint is in it's initial manufacture, so by their very nature drivers of Classic Cars are doing their bit by using their classic and not buying a new car instead, which would have to be made, using up precious resources and creating unnecessary pollution.

MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES

MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!

My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the most of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too.

MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.

THE MTSV DIFFERENCE

Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won't notice…I just couldn't do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.

Any other questions, please feel free to contact me via the details on my website. I'm a firstly and foremostly a true car enthusiast of many, many years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.

Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
