This June 1962 registered Sunbeam Rapier series 3a is the rare and desirable top of the ‘Audax’ range model from the Rootes Group .
This example is well known to the Sunbeam Rapier Owners Club and although not a very recent restoration, the car has had a thorough and comprehensive restoration back in 2012 and is well documented in a detailed history file which comes with the car.
The car is in excellent all-round condition, bodywork is excellent. Mechanically the car is ‘on the button’ with the benefit of the more robust series 5 engine and gearbox which gives increased power and full synchromesh in all gears and pulls strongly. The interior is in very good condition, with excellent headlining and woodwork which is highly polished with no cracks, fading or peeling. All the dashboard dials work correctly and the chrome work is excellent with no pitting, rust or staining.
All the gauges, heater, 2 speed wipers, horn, overdrive work as they should and the car always attracts enthusiastic attention.
Owners – 1st owner kept the car until his death in 1970, car was then left in the garage by his wife until her death in 2001. The next owner took ownership in 2003, it appears that there have been five owners prior to me.
History – All previous registration doc’s including green log book, MOT cert’s from 2004 in which time it covered approximately 10000 miles, current mileage 46500 (this will increase with use) with almost 8 months mot and no advisories.
There is little history between 2003 until 2004 when it was used in films, January 04 – The Long Firm BBC featuring Derek Jacobi, December 04 – Jericho Robert Lindsay, Peter Bowles etc, and March 2005 Margaret (life of Princess Margaret), DVD’s of all 3 films are included in the sale. In 2006 it took part in the Classic Harvest Tour and was the publicity car in Peking to Paris Motor Challenge.
In 2012 the car then underwent a comprehensive restoration by Colin Tait, large history file included in sale.
Altogether a lovely rare car which is easily capable of keeping up with modern traffic and will cruise in overdrive at 60-70mph without much effort.
