Welcome to the sale details of my Bristol 406.
This really is a very special opportunity for a discerning buyer to create a bespoke motor car to their own taste using their own ideas and imagination.
This Bristol is one of many that in the past were subjected to the vandalism of those wanting only the amazing Bristol straight six engine and gearbox. Terribly sad to say that many chassis and bodywork were left to rot, which given the pedigree of the marque was a great shame.
This car then has no engine or gearbox. In the past I have fitted the Triumph 2. 5 litre straight six to a 406, and a Rover SD1 V8 engine to a 405. A gentleman who authored a brilliant book on Bristol Cars, owns and uses a 406 with the Rover engine on a daily basis, so there are tried and tested engine replacement options, including more modern BMW straight six engines.
The great benefit this car brings is that all of the structural welding has been completed to a high standard. The boot has been rebuilt, wheel arches all made good, and the sill outriggers have been completed. In essence, the car is structurally correct. The bodywork has been returned to bare metal, a small area of the roof to complete, which will be done for collection. All glass and chrome work is complete, though the front bumper is missing. They are available, however I was going to complete the car without bumpers.
The interior sold the car to me in the first place. Love the hide colour. Though it does need a Woolies colouring kit, the hide is soft without dryness. Headlining is good requiring a minor repair. The door cards and rear trim panels need work, but that’s a straightforward do it yourself task, no complicated mouldings. The front and rear screen rubbers need replacement, but they are readily available.
This really is a very exciting project, when finished the car will look wonderful, it’s a beautiful shape. So elegant, so different. The potential of having a thoroughbred cast iron classic with modern running gear is irresistible.
I’m selling only because my dream Bristol 412 is needing my time and money.
An addendum. I’ve been asked if the car has axles. Yes, both are present, as are the brakes and prop shaft. The car rolls freely.
