Reluctant sale of Huey Green - a 1979 model with twin-carburettor 2-litre, T4 engine.
Huey has been garaged the whole time he has been in the UK and it shows!
Extensive restoration carried out about 10 years ago by DM Bodyshop in Glasgow.
"Top end" engine rebuild 3000 miles ago by the late, great, Dennis Dunlop - including:
• pistons
• barrels
• heads
• heat exchangers
• exhaust
• clutch
Dennis also fitted a brand new thermostat (sourced in the States) to ensure the cooling system works as it should. Other mechanical items include new CV joints/ boots and front disk calliper overhaul.
This version of the T2 has the spare wheel mounted in the front bumper and behind the unique square box (I like to keep people guessing when they ask). It also has a retracting step linked to the sliding door mechanism - another head turner for the VW geeks.
The immobiliser still works (but the alarm has disintegrated). There is a fire-suppression system in the engine bay (thankfully never tested) and two extinguishers in the cab - also never used.
Although not required for a historic vehicle, Dumbarton Car Clinic carried out an MOT test in February 2020 which the vehicle passed with one advisory (already corrected) and excellent emissions - 172 ppm CO when the limit is 1200 (good enough for a Cat!).
Internally there is space for two on a full-width rock'n'roll bed and two lighter-weights in the rear-hinged pop top (new canvas fitted during the restoration). There is a two-burner cooker, sink with working electric pump and a working three-way fridge for keeping things cool. Front seats are from a VW but have been re-covered in velour. It is possible to get the Westfalia plaid to restore the van's Feng Shui - or treat it as a blank canvas to do your own thing.
A modern tow bar has been fitted to complement the original electrics - great for carrying bikes.
Other items included in the sale:
• Thule, tow bar-mount bike rack with capacity for 4 bikes
• Tail board/ lights for bike rack (or small trailer if you are brave)
• Campsite accessories (levelling chocks, power hook-up, tripod stools)
• Various spares accumulated over the years: Westy curtains, mosquito screen for tailgate, wiper motor assembly, cables and so on
We have had fun with the van in the five years that we have had it but recognise that it is time for someone else to enjoy it as it has spent most of the last two years in the garage (600 miles in the last 16 months). I had really wanted to make it "my" van but never got round to it: it was too easy to jump in and go (and still is!).
Getting into the van and driving anywhere always brings a smile to my face and results in friendly waves from other drivers.
Come and see it - you'll love it as much as we do!
