The Riley Kestrel version of the “AD016” was produced from 1965 until 1969 and just for two years, until 1967, as the Kestrel 1100, making it the rarest of 1100 models. It was also the most expensive of the range, priced at £781 in 1965 and came with various appointments including a rev-counter and a more comprehensive instrument panel in place of the strip-speedometer. The 1098cc “A” series engine was fitted with a 998 Cooper spec cylinder head and twin SU’s which gave a healthy power increase over the Austin and Morris models, up to 55bhp.
This car is a 1966 Riley kestrel 1100 MK1 in duo tone “Sandy Beige” and “Old English White”. The mileage reading is just 29, 000 which is almost certainly correct and there are old MOT’s going back to 1977 when the mileage was just 17, 000. This is an older restoration that presents in very good condition and has clearly been used sparingly since. In 1995 it was treated to a comprehensive body renovation at a cost then of over £5k with various new panels fitted and two new sub-frames. The underside is rock solid and the upper body is excellent. The paint finish presents well with some minor imperfections. The interior trim is in good order with a little wear to the front seats and everything works, including the optional reversing lights. The under bonnet area presents very well and could easily be detailed up to "show standard" with a little further work.
On the road, this Riley drives beautifully, it’s certainly the best 1100 we have driven, with no knocks or rattles, a precise gear-change, strong brakes, smooth clutch and a sweet engine note with excellent oil-pressure. We have just carried out some re-commissioning and various cosmetic jobs. It has recently had an oil change and new plugs and is fitted with electronic ignition. It is now ready to use and drive anywhere.
Prices for the up-market versions of the 1100 have risen considerably and there have been cars in the market at over £10k so this one represents outstanding value.
