Classic Classics are delighted to be able to offer this iconic and very rare and sought after BMW 318iS.
First registered in October 1990, this stunning BMW 318is has been cherished by only six owners from new. The second to last being a very well-known and highly respected teacher of high performance cars, in fact for a period in the 1960’s he was the only civilian instructor to ever work for the Metropolitan Police Driving school, which at the time set the highest driving standards in the world.
These 318is models are powered by the M42 engine, the most modern engine in the E30 model range. It’s a DOHC engine with an updated Bosch Motronic 1. 3, hydraulic valve adjusters and coil on plug ignition. The M42 engine is a free revving engine that produces a very respectable 134 bhp.
This BMW 318iS has certainly been looked after through its life judging by the 34 service stamps and large number of invoices we have on file.
On opening the door you are welcomed by the chequered sports cloth seats with adjustable leg extensions, the M Tech steering wheel and gear knob give you the feeling of this being a proper drivers car. Refinements come in the form of electric front widows, central door locking and a tilt and slide sunroof.
Turn the key and the punchy engine fires into life with no effort what’s so ever. On the road the car feels great with its free revving engine and crisp gear changes. The car handles very well and feels very planted on the road due to its Motorsport chassis set up whilst retaining its great ride quality.
We sold this car back in lockdown 2020 to a Simon, a great customer from Portsmouth who had one of these back in the day and wanted another one to re live his youth. Whilst in his possession he took the car to get some more work done and it turned out that the car required some welding work to the bulkhead, a common problem on the E30 models. We agreed to refund him in full and we then set about completely stripping the car to a bare rolling shell so we could do whatever was required. The car was sent to our fabricator/ welder to be sorted, he did find more areas that needed attention so after a couple of weeks we got a solid shell back from him. We do have pictures of the work carried out. The car was then sent to our body shop for an almost full re paint, this included all glass removed, the only parts not painted was the roof and A pillars. Upon re building the car we installed a used crack free dashboard as the original one was cracking in various places. The result is a very solid and stunning BMW E30 318is.
We then rang Simon as promised when it was finished and he was over the moon with the result and bought the car back straight away, that was July 2022, he now has decided to move abroad so we were delighted to be able to re purchase the car back again.
A very usable classic car that will put a big smile on your face whenever you are out in it.
