Made famous by building lightweight bodies for Italian marques for the Mille Miglia, the Carrozzeria Ghia design company have been building and designing cars since 1913. It was in 1955 when Ghia teamed up with German coachbuilding company Karmann and spawned the iconic 50’s classic, the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.
Designers around the world dubbed the Karmann Ghia as one of the world’s most beautiful products.
Unlike the Beetle, the Karmann Ghia's body panels were butt-welded, hand-shaped, and smoothed with English pewter in a time-consuming process similar to higher-end manufacturers, resulting in the Karmann Ghia's higher price point.
We are excited to offer this 1963 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia presented today in Golden Metallic over beige vinyl trim, cream enamel steering wheel matching rear windscreen venetian blinds and crush pile carpets.
The Karmann Ghia was discovered here in Australia in derelict condition in the early 2000s and is believed to be an unconverted and original in its right-hand drive form. With the project beginning in 2004 and finishing in late 2006, the car was taken back to bare metal, built and meticulously restored to show car standards fitted with air suspension.
The car changed hands in 2007 where it was maintained by marque specialists in Victoria, the suspension brought back to factory standard and driven sparingly by its custodian for the next 10 years. In 2017 it was placed into secure storage and today, looks as if was only finished yesterday travelling very few miles since its restoration.
Accompanied with a host of paperwork documenting maintenance works and parts receipts this classic Volkswagen has lived a charmed life since its restoration.
