Description

1932 MG 'M' Type Midget - current VSCC Buff Form

Launched at the 1928 Motor Show, the M Type, based on the contemporary Morris Minor, was to prove an instant success. Powered by the 847cc overhead cam engine as used in the Minor, but now developing 20 bhp, the M Type was lively, being capable of 65mph - quite something for such a small car at the time.

Many sporting achievements were to boost sales, both in trials and on the track, with class wins in the 1930 'Double Twelve' race at Brooklands.

Early models had fabric coachwork, but steel panels were used from 1931 until production ceased the following year, when the M Type was superseded by the J Type.

A late model, having been registered in March 1932, this M Type was modified some years later to the style of the aforementioned Double Twelve cars, with cutaway doors, downdraft SU carburettor. The car was the subject of extensive restoration in the 1990s, with photographs and receipts to substantiate. An old style logbook is also provided, from which it would appear that the MG was with its original lady owner for more than 40 years.

A J2 gearbox is fitted and the car drives very well with brisk performance and has a current VSCC Buff Form.

In the current ownership it has proved reliable, great fun and quite successful in VSCC driving tests.
