Description
Anybody hardly turns a head when a new Lamborghini Huracán or Ferrari 488 Pista with snarling exhausts is flashed by its nouveau riche owner in the more posh parts of London around Kensington and Belgravia. On a rare occasion one however could get lucky and spot a renaissance man of the creative class when he silently prowls the streets in his teutonic aristocratic car. The big, but discrete and elegant pillarless coupe is a delightful sight and immediately sends one back to another world, an old world of true class and refinement. It is the big S-Class coupe from the 1960s in its most rare and expensive form, the 300 SE
The W112 was in fact a different beast from the more common, but from the outside almost identical W111. Both were designed by Paul Bracq, in-house chief designer and head of Mercedes design studio in Sindelfingen. Hand built and in only 2. 419 cars the W112 was also a technical tour de force of its days. Engine was the “big block” M189 in-line six from the iconic 300 SL “Gullwing”, in the W112 in an even more refined version with engine block in aluminum and mechanical fuel injection, which in those days usually were fitted only to aero engines. An important luxury feature was a self-leveling air suspension. Power-steering, 4-speed automatic transmission and limited slip differential on the rear axle was also on the list of features.
An almost art deco inspired interior with chrome, high gloss polished wood and an abundance of thick leather provided a top of the class atmosphere for its occupants. No wonder this Über-Benz came with a price tag more than 50% higher than the W111 and higher than a Rolls-Royce.
This car is one of the only two W112 believed sold new in Denmark. It was owned by the Mercedes-Benz importer himself Mr. Peter Bohnstedt-Petersen. He ordered it in this silver metallic with red leather and with factory fitted sun-roof.
A 3 year long and very comprehensive restoration to concours condition has just been completed and the quality will match or surpass the very best samples available anywhere on the market. Every nut and bolt on this car has been restored from a complete engine with injection rebuilt and calibrated by German specialist to gearbox, rear diff, and air suspension down to the small air compressor. Body was taken to bare metal and painted in the correct silver metal and the interior has been completely restored with new upholstery in original MB leather, pattern and color. Dashboard is restored by skilled cabinet maker and all chrome is new.
This impressive 300 SE is now back in full glory exactly as it left the factory with full matching numbers and colors and we firmly believe it will match the demands of even the most discerning buyer.
