HISTORY OF THE LAND ROVER
The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured and produced under licence by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, to include Australia, Southern and North Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Malaysia, to name just a few. In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers. Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The Defenders offered in the US during the 90’s had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover’s other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the Defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.
THE CAR
This 1990 Land Rover Defender 110 200TDI was first registered on 22/ 11/ 1990 in Manresa the capital of the Comarca of Bages, located in Catalonia. The vehicle was owned by a family business from new. Their business was based in the wine bottling sector. Manresa is a well known industrial town, associated with textiles, glass blowing and metal work. Quite charmingly the vehicle has had a working life for the past 30 years distributing the family businesses wine bottles locally.
Subsequently the vehicle has benefited from single owner maintenance and stewardship. 2020 among a lot of things is this young' Land Rover's 30th anniversary. So with that in mind it would seem fitting for this Defender to find a new home and possibly a new personality. Probably not so romantic but little more exciting. Being a 110 three door hardtop vehicle, there are endless possibilities for a overland conversion, or even a soft top beach runner build.
PAPERWORK
The vehicle is accompanied with its original Rover Spanish Tarjeta technical inspection logbook that documents the cars technical specification. This is complete with every state technical safety inspection from its first test year in 1995 up until February 2019. The car recently passed its latest technical inspection ITV in Spain in February and is in fully compliant roadworthy state until Its most recent inspection in September 2019. Although many might think the vehicle's mileage is monumental, it's certainly a nice touch to purchase a vehicle with mileage records dating annually for nearly over 30 years. The history file is also accompanied with a Spanish state history report, This gives a digital record of mileages dating back to 2013, along with any change of ownership that would've occurred. In this case nada! The vehicle also comes with an English translated clean Spanish Carfax report.
CONDITION
INTERIOR
There are 2 front seats covered in original moorland cloth and accompanied by a black vinyl centre console. Although the seat covers are in very good condition for the age the form padding, Is due for renewal. I would personally keep the originality and change the internal padding. To the rear of the cargo area is decked out with 4 by 4 side facing black vinyl bench seating. Giving the vehicle a good amount of capacity to accommodate 10 people. Uniquely for Spain the vehicle actually has legal homologation to carry this many individuals this can be seen on the Tarjeta, denoted by wording 2/ 8 Num de seients.
EXTERIOR & PAINT
The majority of the panels represent straight with the exception of the offside rear quarter which has some likely parking damage to the rear body capping. This is the panel that holds the indicator and brake light. Overall the vehicle carries a substantial amount of original paint. There are areas that have been painted over the years. Notably on the rear offside adjacent from the rear number plate, there is some paint cracking, consistent with a vehicle that had some paint work. Likely exacerbated by the rear door hitting against this panel
GLASS
All windows and windshield are chip free and intact. All the windows are factory original with the exception of the driver windshield. To include original heated rear window. I believe this would've been a factory accessory in 1990.
WHEELS
The vehicle had been fitted with a set of spanish homologated steel deep dish wheels, However has been recently upgraded with a set of five spoke alloy Boost wheels. The rear tailgate mounted spare wheel is still the factory original steel wheel. The vehicle can be fitted with either factory steel or the previous homologated Deep dish rims in addition to the fitted Boost wheels.
MECHANICAL
The engine is a factory 200Tdi 11L model. They were produced from 1990-1994 and although the 300 TDI is more refined, and an advanced iteration, It actually carries less power than the 200 TDI. Making a 200 TDI a really great model that shouldn't be overlooked. Servicing and maintenance is very similar to the 300TDI. The 200 TDI was also extensively used, Not only on the Defender but in the Range Rover Classic and Discovery range. Thus making knowledge, expertise and parts readily available.
GEARBOX
The LT77 Gearbox runs and shifts easily, with high and low diff locks working fine.
MAINTENANCE OVERVIEW
It's most recent service was earlier this year. This included an oil change and replacing oil, fuel and air filters. Mechanical revisions included change valves and inspecting differentials Internals and replacing the differential oil.
