Description

Here we have a rather nice Yamaha SS50 1972/ 73. A rare early model (469 prefix with low number). This one is the rare flat handlebar version.

It is a matching numbers motorcycle.

Headstock has a VIN plate with first registration in 1973 although the title documents that originally came with the bike were sufficient for the UK DVLA to accept it as manufactured in 1972 and thereby issued it with a 1972/ 73 'L' registration.

First registered in France as an SS50. I personally imported it a number of years ago and set about restoring it as it was in a relatively poor state.

The previous French owner told me that he had already sorted the bottom end of the motor. I have given it a new top end with a new barrel and piston, small end bearing and rings. Magneto and source coils checked and found to be working well but I gave it new points. The bike almost always starts first kick, hot or cold. Since completing the restoration I have only ridden it a few times (most of the time it has been in my dining room) but I took her for a run yesterday and she was fine. Lovely sounding 4-speed motor with crisp response and no nasty bottom end noises.

All electrics work as they should (original Yamaha switchgear). New main wiring loom from the 'Fizzydoctor' who makes the best replica Fizzy looms in my opinion.

Frame repainted and Bodywork professionally resprayed in the correct candy gold. Inside of the tank was excellent and no further work or treatment was needed.

Original seat base is excellent. I recovered it using the original seat chrome trim and strap.

Lots of original parts retained or NOS items used in the restoration. Almost all the nuts, bolts and cycle fixtures are original or NOS Yamaha items. A few pattern parts have been used eg mudguards and pedal guard.

Overall I have tried to aim for a restoration that is faithful to the original 1972 FS1s (as depicted in the Jarno Sarinen brochure that was used to sell the bike - a copy of which I have and will be included in the sale). Consequently some of the original chrome items like the exhaust, air filter caps, speedo etc will have some very, very minor pitting but I was keen to keep as many of the original parts as possible.

Front forks dismantled and rebuilt using new seals and oil and NOS brackets/ bolts.  New chain and sprockets.  Rear wheel has a new Araya rim with genuine Yamaha spokes. Both wheel hubs are original.

This classy moped also comes with original owners manual and its Yamaha toolkit.

I am an enthusiast and collector and I now need to reduce my collection in readiness for a change of house and imminent retirement. Consequently I have a lovely Honda CB750K2 for sale and I will be letting go a Moto Guzzi Le Mans Mk1 shortly.

Any questions please email or call.

Regards
Tony
