The FZR750R OW01 (1989–1990) is a limited‑production, race‑bred 749 cc superbike built to homologate Yamaha’s WSBK effort. With a 121 hp five‑valve Genesis engine, aluminium Deltabox frame, Öhlins rear suspension, and lightweight race components, it was effectively a factory racer with a number plate.
Why Yamaha Built the OW01
The launch of the World Superbike Championship in 1988 required manufacturers to sell road‑legal versions of their race bikes.
Yamaha needed a direct rival to Honda’s dominant RC30.
The result was the OW01, a machine engineered by Yamaha’s race department and produced in very small numbers (≈500 units globally).
It was sold from 1989–1990, though development began earlier (1987).
Racing Purpose
Designed specifically to homologate Yamaha’s WSBK racer.
Thinly disguised as a road bike — removing mirrors, indicators, and fitting slicks essentially turned it into a ready‑to‑race machine.
Successor
Replaced by the YZF750R/ SP in 1992, which continued Yamaha’s superbike lineage.

We always endeavour to ensure that all mileages are correct as advertised and will state this where possible. With imported vehicles we are not always able to confirm this by contacting previous owners therefore we are unable to completely verify the mileage recorded on the odometer and it must be considered incorrect in these cases.
