An immediate success and one of the most fondly regarded British designs of all time. At the time of its launch in March 1961, the sleek design of the Series-One Fixed Head Coupe was responsible for Enzo Ferrari famously claiming it to be 'the most beautiful car ever made'.
The refined styling of the Series-One E-Type remains the most elegant form of the model and a shape that would prove unbeatable when compared with the two later variations.
In addition the entirely revised version of the 4. 2 XK engine is widely regarded as offering the ultimate combination of Series-One style and performance. With its triple SU carburettors providing increased torque and driveability the 4. 2 also featured more comfortable seats and an all-synchro gearbox. With a top speed in excess of 153mph and revolutionary use of all-round disc brakes, Autocar Magazine tested a UK spec E-Type 4. 2 Fixed Head Coupe in May 1965 and claimed "in its 4. 2 guise the E-Type is a fast car (the fastest we have ever tested) and offers just about the easiest way to travel quickly by road."
