1962 MATCHLESS 498CC G50 RACING MOTORCYCLE. THE EX-STEVE JOLLY. FRAME NO. 1857. A truly amazing and most likely never to be repeated again opportunity in securing a very sought after and desirable piece of motorcycle racing history. Only around 180 units produced. Originally owned by successful motorcycle racer in the sixties \' Steve Jolly who additionally with the bike won many British short circuit races, finished 17th in the 1967 Isle of Man Senior TT. GENUINE ORIGINAL EXAMPLE with ** LETTER OF AUTHENTICITY** from George Beale who is a well-respected and world renowned classic motorcycle specialist with over 50 years in the industry specialising in buying, selling and valuations. George is so fond of these specific classis models that he builds and sells the exact replicas of them \' THIS IS THE GENUINE ORIGINAL EXAMPLE. On 29/ 11/ 2018 George Beale issued the following letter of authenticity;
This motorcycle is a genuine original machine. The engine has been fitted with replacement factory made aluminium crankcases. These would have been fitted in period. This was common practice because the original magnesium ones had a tendency to crack near the main bearing housing.
The gearbox has been replaced with a 5-speed Quaife model. This was the normal thing to do as the original 4 speed limited the selection of the correct gearing.
The 19 inch wheel rims have been changed for 18 inch so that more suitable tyres could be fitted.
One would expect all these changes to be made by a serious competitive rider.
The bike was originally owned and raced by Steve Jolly who was a very successful rider in the sixties. When Steve retired the bike was sold to the USA collector Robert McLean who kept it in his collection for many years, 5 or 6 years ago he entered it in Bonham\'s auction in Las Vagas where it was purchased by Derek Hood of JD Classics in Essex UK. \'
