Introduced in 1958, the G12 was developed by Associated Motor Cycles at its Matchless works in Plumstead, south-east London, with the lucrative American market firmly in mind. Representing a significant step up from the preceding G11, the new model featured a 646cc, air-cooled parallel-twin engine producing approximately 35bhp, driving through a four-speed gearbox and chain final drive. Known in some markets as the Monarch, the G12 combined traditional British engineering with the greater performance and refinement demanded by the expanding export market. With its substantial twin-cylinder engine, period styling and practical sidecar configuration, this Matchless provides a rather different proposition from the conventional solo motorcycle. The combination lends itself equally to leisurely touring, classic motorcycle gatherings and simply enjoying the unique experience of sidecar motoring. Produced until 1966, the G12 remains an appealing representative of the larger-capacity British motorcycles of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
