Currently with only three owners - three generations of the same family - from new, and MOT'd for peace of mind until late May 2021, this stunning Riley 4/ 72 was at one time housed and curated by the British Leyland Heritage Museum. Documentation to this effect, and including the car's original bill of sale, makes up part of a huge binder of paperwork accompanying the car.
The original owner of the car, a Mr Charles James Edward Large, Chief Designer of Railcars at Metro Cammell in Birmingham, bought this Riley new from Colmore Depot for the then princely sum of £930.
The official glorious colour combination is Almond Green and Porcelain Green. This is a truly rock solid example with crisp arches and ramrod straight panels throughout. The original chromework is in magnificent order too.
The fresh-looking colour-co-ordinated interior is absolutely beautiful, with deep comfortable seats, and a very clean roof lining, and marvellously well-preserved wooden trim and dashboard.
The engine bay is scrupulously clean and the 1622cc engine is in outstanding condition. The gearbox is of the robust Borg Warner automatic variety delivering a fantastically smooth change and it makes the car a pleasure to drive. If it was possible to accurately describe the driving experience in a classic car, this one really does have a tight feel to it. We honestly believe the the mileage reading of 38, 100 miles to be genuine.
In the words of the last owner, who inherited the car from his grandfather (who bought it from new), "this car has been driven for around 10-20 miles per year for the past 15 years, and always starts first time and drives perfectly. She is a quirky old lady but drives proudly and turns heads."
