The Riley 4/ 72 was produced from 1961 until 1969. BMC’s model hierarchy was complicated in the 60’s but the Riley versions, which combined luxury with increased power were the most expensive, costing around 20% more than an Austin A60. Consequently they sold in much smaller numbers and just 14, 000 4/ 72’s were sold out of a total of 550. 000 ADO38 models.
This car is a 1964 Riley 4/ 72 in Almond Green over Snowberry White. This car came to us as a bereavement sale – the last owner bought it earlier this year but unfortunately he died before he was able to use it. The interior is excellent and as you can see from the photos, the body and paint are in fine order. Five years ago it had a substantial body restoration including underside welding, a re-paint and the front seats were re-trimmed correctly in leather. We have just carried out various cosmetic jobs and some re-commissioning – it now drives very well, the engine gearbox, clutch and brakes are all excellent and everything works, although the original period radio lights up but crackles.
This Riley is not a concours original car but it is solid, presentable and drives beautifully. We are big fans of these cars and have sold several recently. They are a rare sight and offer great value at little more than a Morris Minor in similar condition.
