An unusual opportunity to purchase a gorgeously restored Austin Gipsy.
One of only around 21, 000 built by Austin to compete with the popular Land Rover. The two companies merged not long after the Gipsy was developed so, consequently, production of this promising vehicle was halted. Although superficially similar to the Land Rover of the time, the Gipsy was different in some key points. It had a steel body and independent suspension on their ‘Flexitor’ rubber springs. The hard top is made of fibreglass and the interior is slightly more advanced. Although the material used made them more susceptible to the body corroding, the steel chassis was made of oval shaped material so was more durable and less likely to hold water (which can lead to corrosion).
The example we have listed for sale here has a BMC petrol 2199cc engine and is the short wheelbase, hardtop model. The records suggest that ALF 568B was initially owned by the MoD (something backed up by the distinctive number plate). Although we have no written records to prove it, the story goes that this one ended up on the Shetland Islands in the early 1970s to work on the oilfields. It spent its life on the Shetland Islands and eventually found its way into preservation. It was bought by the previous owner in 2014 in Shetland who carried out a complete restoration to a high standard. We now have the car for sale in Devon and it is based in our showroom.
Having had a good look around the car and having taken it out for a few drives, we are delighted to say that it performs wonderfully and is a fantastic example of this design. Those that have visited Berrybrook in the past might know that we are Land Rover enthusiasts at heart, having a couple of Series 3s in the family which we use as daily vehicles. We have to say though, this Austin stands out as a slightly more refined, and yet still charming, take on the rustic Land Rover shape we all know and love. It does everything it should and leaves you grinning as you drive it down the road.
We understand the low mileage is correct and is a consequence of it spending most of its life on the island. The example needed minimal welding upon restoration (impressive considering the conditions found on the Shetland Islands) and had a complete overhaul of the major components. The work has been carried out to a meticulous standard giving a vehicle which is nicely presented and well finished but is equally still very usable and not over restored; it reflects its pedigree and allows its character to shine. Being a historic vehicle, it benefits from being Tax and MOT exempt. Despite this, the most recent MOT was carried out in 2018 which it passed with nothing major to consider. It comes with a good folder of paperwork including some historical information, details of the work done and registration documents.
This is, overall, a rare classic 4x4 from the 1960s which is good to go. It would make a good show car but is also very capable and usable.
