For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Lightweight in Drab Olive (1980).
Petrol 2286cc. MOT Exempt. Tax Exempt. Pioneer Tools. Heater with front demist. Period Military Features. New Canvas & Tyres. Recently refurbished by John Brown 4×4. Twin Tanks with changeover tap (working).
We are delighted to present for sale this handsome Land Rover® Lightweight. We purchased this vehicle from an enthusiast, who loved it dearly and dry stored it, only using it for shows and sunny weekends.
The vehicle has got just about everything one would hope to see on a ‘good’ Lightweight – both internally and externally. On the outside, as the photos show, the bodywork is unusually straight, and the paint finish is exactly as one would hope to see. A full set of our own 750 military tyres are fitted, with matching bonnet mounted spare – which not only look superb but give unrivalled off-road performance alongside an improved cruising ability due to the larger rolling radius. The canvas is new too and is a colour match for the body which we think suits it well. In addition to all this, the level of detail which includes a host of desirable features, is really nice to see….. the split tailgate with pioneer tools, front and rear bumperettes, lifting eyes, NATO hitch, military screw lenses, bridging plate and wing top ATU flaps. The culmination of these surviving items, coupled with the general standard of the vehicle, really do make this Lightweight stand out from the crowd.
The ‘complete and original’ story continues right throughout the interior of this vehicle – there are two standard seats in the front, with centre box for batteries, gun clips to the bulkhead, some surviving radio equipment, heater with front demist and the original military flyscreens are all present. The hand throttle and the infrared convoy lighting system are still fitted too. Matting is fitted to the footwells with a load mat to the rear area, which is unfitted but could house bench seats on request for £350. The level of detailing inside the cabin is really pleasing.
Out on the road, this old girl drives just as it should. The larger tyres give a more relaxed drive and increase fuel economy. The twin tanks survive and work which gives a colossal 500 mile range between trips to the pumps – great to see. The gauges for the twin tanks even work – incredible and almost unheard of. Once again, nodding its cap to being a well cared for survivor.
In summary, if you are looking for an original, fully loaded Land Rover® Lightweight, which benefits from MOT and Tax Exemption, then this is well worth considering. Due to the exemptions, it can be owned and used with minimal fuss, and is a truly versatile, year-round vehicle – these are capable vehicles in the winter months, and keep nice and warm with the Smiths’ Square heater…. but come the summer months, just about everything can be removed easily and without tools to give a wind in the face experience…. they really are a fun Land Rover® to live with. These vehicles have been steadily appreciating in value, so why not convert the money in the bank that is currently a poor investment into an enjoyable, useable and appreciating asset – to be able to ‘have your cake and eat it’ in the very best sense of the phrase. Be quick – I doubt we’ll see a better Lightweight for a very long time.
