Reluctantly for sale is our lovely VW campervan. It’s a 1983 water-cooled, 2 litre petrol, LHD. After 7 years’ ownership, my wife has announced we’re getting a new baby (a snazzy new T6. 1) and it’s arriving soon so the T25 has to go.
The van is in very good condition, overall. It’s not a concourse-perfect show-van, by any means, and there are a couple of rust-bubbles coming up that I was planning to deal with this summer (see pics). The only other outstanding issue I know about is that the blower-motor for the interior heater has failed; I’ve bought a new one but didn’t find time to fit it.
Otherwise the van is great – MOT’d and ready to go camping for this year’s staycation summer! There is loads of service history, from myself and previous owners. The clock is currently showing 69k (kilometres), and it’s on its second lap, so 169k, which equates to 105, 000 miles. Not bad, after 38 years!
The van is a Bilbo conversion, very similar to Westfalia except that the roof opens sideways and is more spacious for people sleeping ‘upstairs’ – two adults can sleep comfortably. The rock-n-roll bed ‘downstairs’ is 130cm wide and also comfortable for two adults to sleep, and has 3 seat-belts. The van also has: leisure battery, 3-way-fridge, sink and water pump, double hob and grill, table, swivel passenger seat, buddy seat with seat-belt, cassette / radio with decent speakers and 6-disc CD changer (retro!) I had a roof-vent fitted, and the interior / living area has had a new headliner and floor recently.
The engine runs very nicely. Since I’ve owned it, the cooling system has been fully updated with all pipes, radiator and cooling fan updated (it was originally an ‘early waterboxer’, but some parts were discontinued so it’s now a ‘later waterboxer’). It’s also had new water pump, fuel pump, alternator, exhaust and battery. Fuel lines have been replaced every couple of years, and the van has been fully serviced every year (new oil, filters, plugs, etc) by XYZ VW specialists in Tottenham, who have also dealt with a couple of rust patches in the past, to a very high standard – keeping the van healthy, regardless of cost, has always been my priority.
The van will come with original user manual, Haynes manual, big folder of paperwork and receipts, lots of spare bits and bobs (bulbs, fan-belts, etc), as well as JustKampers window vents (to avoid condensation build-up while sleeping), a 240v hook-up cable, gas canister, 3-bike Fiamma rack (which happily takes 2 adults + 2 kids bikes with a bit of creative bungee-cording), spare set of keys, plus a detachable solar panel from CampervanCulture to keep the leisure battery topped up off-grid.
This is a lovely van in need of a new family. It’s taken us around Germany, Switzerland, France and Spain, from Cornwall to the tip of Scotland and lots of places between, as well as countless festivals and campsites around the UK. It really turns heads, and I’ve loved the endless conversations with enthusiasts over the years. It sits happily at 70mph on the motorway (although takes a while to get there!) and potters nicely around town.
While this isn’t the most immaculate T25 available out there, it’s certainly a lot better than some I’ve seen. The insurers (Adrian Flux) have always given a decent agreed valuation, currently £12, 500. The van is priced sensibly, including all the spares it comes with.
