1968 MG CGT MGC Coupe DOWNTON 45 Stage Three Triple Carburettor Conversion 2912 cc Straight Six with 4 Speed Manual with Overdrive. A rare opportunity for the MG enthusiast and Downton collector to acquire the Fastest classic MG one could buy in period with the standard British Leyland MG engine range including the V8. Downton claimed a 0 to 60 mph of 7. 3 seconds (Standard 10), 0 to 100 mph of 19. 5 seconds (Standard 29. 3) and 130 mph plus top speed (Standard 118) while averaging 18 to 24 mpg. Very few MGC went to Downton to be modified and fewer had the top 45 conversion, it is believed this was the first and is the most well known with comprehensive paperwork. The C is in smart usable condition and is a joy to drive having covered only 69, 840 miles by its 5 previous owners whom have all been Lincolnshire based residents. A car close to E type performance at a lot less cost. This C would be perfect for classic road rallies or tours or for taking to period events such as Goodwood Revival. This is the most well known and documented Downton C with the most history. Fairly quiet when driven normally especially when cruising in overdrive however when accelerating at full chat it is quite vocal and sounds like a WW2 Spitfire fighter approaching, very unique.
British Racing Green Coachwork with Black Interior.
RFU 943G, Road Tax and M. O. T. Test Exempt, last M. O. T tested in 2019 at 69, 038 miles. We also have the original green log book.
Derek and Pearl McGlen were long term previous owners from 1977 to 2017, they made a number of period upgrades and allowed this Downton to be featured in many publications as well as owning and looking after other MGC and Downton Motor Cars, their Workshop Manual and records are included, they state they averaged between 25 and 30mpg.
Registered 27th February 1968 as I CFU, a copy of the purchase invoice is included.
This MGC is in smart condition and needs no immediate expenditure, it is just waiting to be driven. The paintwork shows very few flaws and marks, the interior is in good useable condition, the uprated engine starts instantly and sounds fantastic and is quite vocal when revved due to the uprated exhaust system and performs superbly as do the brakes and the gearbox. This C has a surprising turn of speed and cruises effortlessly with plenty of power and torque. Recently much expenditure equating to over £5, 000 has been spent on this Downton C including 4x MWS 15 Inch Painted Wire Wheels and 3 Eared Knock off Chrome Spinners, 2x 6 Volt Batteries, Spark Plugs, 4x Michelin XWX Tyres, Paintwork, Oil Cooler, Reconditioning of the Speedometer, Fuel Pump, Carburettor Work, Suspension Work and Brake Servo so it is ready to be enjoyed this coming season.

Engine Modifications Carried out by Downton Engineering Works Ltd. Salisbury, Wiltshire. It went to Downton in May 1968 and the engine was modified to a Stage Three Number 45 Conversion giving 174bhp. Cylinder Head Exchanged (Number 6024).
A record of the numbers made with the Downton conversions was not made but there were more 149bhp stage two or known as 43 conversions than 174bhp stage three or known as 45 conversions, because they were cheaper and easier to fit by the enthusiast.
University Motors carried out modifications to MGC’s and most were fitted with their MG alloy slatted grill which this has as a spare in the boot. Downton kits were available and fitted to a few cars but not carried out by Downton, University Motors gave their own warranties. 21 University Motors cars received the Downton upgrades most were to Stage two spec not Stage three. In reality only a handful of cars went to Downton during production for the 45 upgrades and were badged properly.
