The Austin A40 Somerset will need no introduction to the more muture classic car buyers. It was produced by the Austin Motor Company from 1962 until1954. The Austin Somerset replaced the Austin A40 Devon and, as a body on frame model, it was the same size as its predecessor. It shared a number of components with the Devon which also included a similar 1. 2 litre 4 cylinder pushrod engine. The Somerset's engine was uprated to produce 42 bhp, compared the Devons 40 bhp, giving the car a top speed of 70 mph.
The quite extraordinary example we offer here was in the custody of the last owner for some 40 years. About 7 years ago the previous owner decided to embark on a full ground up restoration of the car. When we say a ground up restoration we mean exactly that. The whole car was stripped down to it's bare chassis. He then proceeded to build the car from the renewed chassis up leaving no stoned unturned to produce a near concourse winning car. The engine rebuild was entrusted to renown MG engine guru Mike Entwistle of Cheshire, who completed a full rebuild and updated the performance with the addition of twin SU carburettors and electronic ignition. The engine rebuild alone cost in excess of three thousand pounds.
All interior trim was replaced including carpets. All exterior brightwork was rechromed. All outer sills replaced and so much more.
Here is a superb restored Austin A40 Somerset ready to show and defy you to find a better one.
