For Sale: Ex Metropolitan Police Car.
I bought the car with the intention of restoring it back to its former glory however, the start of a new job means that I no longer have the time to do so.
It is a genuine ex-service car used in South-East London in the 1970s. Restored (Met Police Spec) cars are now worth upwards of £8000+ However, this is a car which requires significant attention and is therefore priced accordingly.
I understand these former Met Police Morris Minors are now rather rare, so this is an opportunity for someone to own a slice of motoring history.
As can be seen in the photos, upon its retirement from the force, the car has undergone a re-spray (cream) and had the police livery and beacon removed.#

Mechanical
Engine wise, it is a 1971 Minor so has the bigger 1098cc A-Series engine. The engine itself runs well, idles as it should and goes up and down all the gears with no crunching or whining. I have read that that some police forces modified their Minors to make them that bit faster, so there is a possibility that the engine was tuned by the Met Police in 1970 however, I have no paperwork to confirm this.
The brakes need attention as they work but offer little stopping power. The brakes do work but only when the pedal is pumped repeatedly. A new brake master cylinder can be purchased for between £50-£60 which I suspect would sort the problem.
The car does come with a pack of old invoices from over the year. It was last on the road in 2018.
Interior
The interior is in excellent condition and sports full red leather/ vinyl seats (front and back) and door cards. The dashboard has been painted red, which although not original, does suit the car.
There is a zip fitted to the roof lining which is a standard feature of Minor police cars from this period.
Exterior
At some point in the cars life (most likely when it was sold by the Met Police) it was painted cream. The cream paintwork is ok in places but poor in others. Astonishingly, where the cream paint is flaking away, the original ‘panda car’ Bermuda Blue can be seen.
As can be seen in the pictures, there are rusty spots here and there – most significantly a patch around the rear windscreen, above the driver wheel arch and on the bumpers. The main area of concern is the boot floor which has partially rusted through and will at some stage need to be plated over or completely replacing.
