Badge engineering was a fact of life in BMC by the 1950s and 15/ 50 was a prime example of this, being almost identical to the MG Magnette. However, both cars had seperate personalities, with the Wolseley being the luxury option. Those who purchased the Wolseley appreciated how they sat a little higher off the ground, behind the traditional Wolseley grille. Luxury features included the option of wood veneers opposed to the plain but well equipped dash.
The 1957 Wolseley 15/ 50 we offer here is probably one of the most extraordinary Classic cars we have ever had the pleasure of handling. It is often said that we are only custodians of Classic cars. Well, that is certainly the case with this particular car, which believe it or not has covered just 27, 000 miles from new and is offered for sale with an amazing history, all recorded in a comprehensive history file.
If you are of an age to be able to cast your mind back to September 1957, when Paul Anka topped the charts with a song called 'Diana' a well known business lady from South Wales purchased a brand new Wolsesley 15/ 50. At the time she sought the help of two friends, one owned a small motor repair business and his son in law, to help in the purchase. At the time of the purchase in 1957 the car was dispatched to Weathershields in Birmingham to have a close fitting, all metal sun roof fitted, It is possibly the only Wolsesley 15/ 50 to have such a sun roof fitted. The said lady was to own the car for the next 14 years, at which time she passed the car on to one of the gentleman, who had looked after the car for her. The car at this time had covered just 8, 000 miles from new. This gentleman was to keep the car for a further 19 years. In 1989 the car was then acquired by 2 genlemen from Somerset, by which time the car had only covered 19, 000 miles.
The mileage of 27, 000 is substantiated by reams of paperwork, magazine articles, original buff log book and letters of correspondence between owners not forgetting MOT certificates going back some 30 years.
The car would make a be superb addition to any Wolseley collection or just an excellent museum piece.
