Description
This is my exup. It has to be one of the best in the country - 99% original, low mileage, absolutely exceptional condition. Rare to find in this condition, and ready to ride or restore and exhibit. Lots of history, a genuine original uk bike, 2 keys, ready to go.
so many of these bikes have been streetfightered or raced, so it took me a long time to find one this good. It has all original plastics with decals (not repainted) and pretty much all original parts with just consumables changed (see below for details).
this bike has clearly been well looked after and kept indoors, but it's not quite completely concours because it has never been restored. My understanding is it was in a collection and then kept on a dealer's floor for 6 years before i bought it. When i collected it the dealer drained and cleaned the tank, ultrasound cleaned the carbs, replaced oil, filter, coolant and plugs, and it ran well enough. When i got it home i ran through it to check everything mechanically and then did the following:
- new braided brake hoses & fluid (i have the old hoses but wouldn't trust them on the road!)
- calipers cleaned and bleed nipples replaced
- new michelin road 5 tyres
- brand new exup valve, bearings and mounting plate. Replaced bolts with titanium
- new exhaust studs & nuts
- replaced seat rubbers and various grommets that had perished
- stripped and greased suspension linkages
- replaced fork oil
- replaced the battery with a lithium one
- replaced both headlamp bulbs
- replaced the fuel hose
i rode it as a "sunny day" bike during the summer (i have 3 bikes) and it runs and handles beautifully, just like new.
i've also tidied it up cosmetically, as follows:
- leather seat cover. This is a really nice, high quality cover which looks great and is very comfy. I've stapled it over the original cover so you can go back if needs be.
- replacement powerbronze screen. The original screen has a strange mark across it (almost like a heat stretch).
- titanium brake bolts to replace the corroded ones.
- new renthal grips
wherever possible i've used original parts rather than pattern. As far as i know the engine has never been apart.
for full disclosure, the less good/ not original bits:
- being original and unrestored, there are various fasteners and small brackets etc. That have some corrosion, but the bike has clearly never been stored outside so none of that is serious.
- for a daily rider, i'd get the valve clearances checked - they are due.
- the fairing inner panels have been repaired. These seem to be unobtainable as they are very fragile. The repair is unobtrusive.
- the rear shock is not original. It's a hagon unit and works well.
i have saved as many useable original parts as possible, (brake hoses etc.) for anyone who wants to do a full restoration. I will also include a yamaha service manual, haynes manual and an exup book, with all the other documentation.
this is a lovely bike but age is catching up with me so i'm unlikely to ride it again. That's the trouble with immaculate bikes - do you use them or not?
